How can I build pride in choosing Halal even when it is hard?

Parenting Perspective

Teaching a child to feel a sense of pride in choosing Halal, especially when it requires them to turn away from something popular or tempting, is a delicate art. It involves shaping their inner conviction rather than simply enforcing outer compliance. True pride in one’s faith grows when children begin to see their Halal choices not as a form of restriction, but as a source of dignity—a badge of honour reflecting their trust, self-control, and deep love for Allah Almighty.

Affirming Their Courage and Strength of Character

When your child successfully avoids something doubtful or politely says ‘no’ to a tempting but non-Halal food, it is important to praise their strength of character, not just the action itself. The choice is the outcome, but the courage is the virtue. You could say, ‘That must have been difficult, but you showed real courage. Allah loves a heart that stays true to Him, even when it is not easy’. This kind of acknowledgement transforms an act of obedience into a moment of empowerment. Your child will begin to associate living a Halal life with inner strength, not with fear or weakness.

Fostering a Positive and Proud Muslim Identity

Children develop a strong moral compass and a sense of pride when they can link their actions to who they are, not just what they are supposed to do. Frame their choices within a positive and collective identity. For example, remind them: ‘We are a family that chooses what pleases Allah because we want our hearts to remain clean, peaceful, and connected to Him’. Using language of belonging, such as, ‘This is how Muslims show honour to the blessings Allah has given them’, is far more empowering than saying, ‘We are not allowed to have that’. This frames their actions as an expression of their identity, which strengthens their sense of inner ownership.

Transforming Challenges into Spiritual Victories

When your child expresses frustration that others seem to have an easier time, validate their feelings but then gently reframe the situation. Remind them that true faith is not always about doing what is easy, but about choosing what is right. You could say, ‘Every single time you choose Halal when it is hard, you are proving your love for Allah in a special way, and He sees it and loves it, even if no one else does’.

Spiritual Insight

Allah Almighty deeply honours and appreciates the efforts of those who remain faithful, especially in times of challenge. The act of choosing Halal when it feels difficult is not merely an act of obedience; it is a profound act of devotion that strengthens, purifies, and elevates the soul.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Ankaboot (29), Verses 69:

And those people that endeavour (to please) Us (Allah Almighty); so, We (Allah Almighty) shall indeed, guide them (to those pathways) that lead to Us; and indeed, Allah (Almighty) is with those who are benevolent (in their actions).

This verse is a divine promise and a deep source of reassurance for both parent and child. It confirms that every small act of striving (mujahadah) to stay within Allah’s boundaries earns His divine help, guidance, and companionship. The struggle itself, therefore, becomes the very means of spiritual growth and of drawing closer to Him.

It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 3984, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘That which is lawful is clear and that which is unlawful is clear, and between the two of them are doubtful matters about which many people do not know. Thus he who avoids doubtful matters clears himself in regard to his religion and his honor…’

This beautiful Hadith captures the very essence of where true Halal pride comes from: the peace of a clear conscience. A child who learns that the real reward for their sacrifice is not social acceptance but inner tranquillity (sakinah) will begin to find a deep and lasting satisfaction in pleasing Allah. This inner peace becomes a tangible reward that they can learn to recognise and cherish, even if it means setting themselves apart from the crowd. Their pride will no longer come from being different, but from knowing that every choice made for Allah’s sake carries with it the ultimate honour of being seen, loved, and rewarded by Him.
