Parenting Perspective
Chopping boards can quickly absorb odours and harbour bacteria, especially when used for raw meat or strong-smelling foods like garlic and onions. Maintaining their cleanliness is essential for food hygiene and quality. Adopting the mindset that, ‘we use chopping boards every day, and it is important that they stay safe and fresh for every meal’, helps establish a routine of regular care, preventing any build-up of germs or unpleasant smells.
Clean Immediately and Regularly
The most effective way to keep chopping boards fresh is to clean them immediately after use. For wooden boards, rinse away food particles with hot water and mild soap, but do not soak them as this can cause warping and cracking. For plastic boards, it is essential to wash them with hot, soapy water after each use, especially after cutting raw meat. Once clean, dry the board thoroughly with a cloth or allow it to air dry completely, as any residual moisture can encourage bacteria to grow.
Deodorise with Natural Solutions
To eliminate stubborn odours from ingredients like onion, garlic, or raw fish, you can use simple, natural deodorisers. Sprinkle a small amount of baking soda over the board, scrub it with a damp cloth, and let it stand for a few minutes before rinsing. Alternatively, wiping the board with a cloth soaked in white vinegar will help to neutralise odours and disinfect the surface. After using either method, ensure the board is dried properly to avoid moisture build-up.
Maintain Wooden Boards with Oil
To preserve a wooden chopping board, it is important to condition its surface regularly with food-safe mineral oil or beeswax. This simple step creates a protective barrier, preventing the wood from drying out, cracking, or absorbing liquids and odours. To do this, rub the oil into the wood with a clean cloth and allow it to soak in overnight. This practice not only keeps the board hygienic but also extends its lifespan. Avoid using cooking oils like olive oil or vegetable oil, as they can become rancid and cause unpleasant smells.
Spiritual Insight
Islam places great emphasis on cleanliness, instructing that the tools and spaces we use for preparing food must be kept pure, as they are directly connected to the nourishment Allah Almighty provides.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verses 222:
‘“…Indeed, Allah (Almighty) loves those who repent excessively and those who adore their personal purification”.’
This verse underscores the value of purity in all aspects of life. By keeping your chopping boards clean and odour-free, you are adhering to this important Islamic principle, ensuring that the food you prepare for your family is both physically and spiritually pure.
It is recorded in Sunan Nisai, Hadith 2437, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Purification is half of faith, and prayer is the best of acts of worship.’
This hadith highlights the significance of purity in our daily lives, connecting it directly to faith. When you ensure that your chopping boards are free from harmful bacteria and odours, you are not just protecting your family’s health; you are following the sunnah of cleanliness. Every small act of purification is a part of our faith, and caring for the tools used in food preparation reflects a deep commitment to upholding that standard.
Caring for your kitchen tools thus becomes more than a practical task; it is a form of spiritual mindfulness. When you teach these habits to your children, you protect their health while instilling the values of respect, care, and gratitude for the blessings of Allah Almighty.
