Parenting Perspective
In a busy kitchen, spills are a part of daily life, and choosing the right tool to clean them can be a challenge. Each option offers different benefits: cloths are reusable, paper towels provide convenience, and disinfectant wipes offer a quick way to sanitise. The key is to select the right tool for the job without compromising on safety or cleanliness, based on the principle of cleaning up quickly, safely, and efficiently.
Cloth for Routine Clean-Ups
For general spills, cloth towels are an excellent choice, provided they are washed regularly. They are environmentally friendly, cost-effective, and can clean most messes effectively with just warm water and soap. To maintain hygiene, cloths must be laundered frequently, especially after cleaning food spills such as grease or juices from raw meat. You can simplify this process by having designated cloths for specific tasks (one for the worktop, another for the table) and ensuring they are washed daily.
Paper Towels for Hygienic Cleaning
Paper towels are ideal for single-use cleaning, particularly in situations involving high-risk contamination. This includes spills of raw meat juices or other foods that may carry bacteria. They offer convenience, quick absorption, and can be discarded immediately after use, which significantly reduces the risk of cross-contamination. While frequent use can be wasteful, a balanced approach is often best, reserving paper towels for raw food spills or sticky substances while using cloths for regular wiping.
Disinfectant Wipes for Sanitising
Disinfectant wipes are most effective as a final sanitising solution after a spill has already been cleaned. They kill germs and bacteria on contact, which is crucial after spills involving raw chicken, meat, or other potential pathogens. However, they should be used after a cloth or paper towel has removed the bulk of the liquid or food. Always ensure the wipes are food-safe and avoid relying on them for every minor spill, as this can lead to unnecessary exposure to chemicals.
Spiritual Insight
In Islam, cleanliness is a reflection of our respect for the blessings Allah Almighty has given us, including our food and the home in which we prepare it. The simple act of cleaning up is an expression of the gratitude we feel for the sustenance He provides.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Tawbah (9), Verses 108:
‘…In that (Masjid) there are those men who love to purify themselves, and Allah (Almighty) loves those that seek inner purity.’
This verse highlights the importance of purity in both a spiritual and physical sense. When we maintain the cleanliness of our homes, especially after preparing food, we honour the trust Allah Almighty has placed in us. By choosing the right tools to wipe spills, you not only protect your family’s health but also demonstrate care for the provisions Allah Almighty has granted.
It is recorded in Mishkaat Al Masaabih,Hadith294, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘The key to Paradise is prayer, and the key to prayer is cleanliness.’
This hadith shows how deeply cleanliness is embedded in our faith, connecting our physical actions to our spiritual rewards. When you clean your kitchen, whether wiping a spill or tidying a space, you are not just preventing germs; you are engaging in an act of worship that draws you closer to Allah Almighty. Instilling this value in your children teaches them that every act of cleaning has a spiritual dimension.
Through this perspective, every household task becomes an opportunity to show gratitude to Allah Almighty and to fulfil our responsibilities with mindfulness, contributing to both our physical well-being and our spiritual growth.
