Parenting Perspective
Teach the Core Principle
Teaching your child what the Quran says about equality starts with explaining that Islam teaches that all people are equal in the sight of Allah, regardless of their gender, their ethnicity, or their background. You can begin by sharing the core principle that, in Islam, every individual has an equal worth that is based on their faith, their good deeds, and their character. You might say, ‘In the Quran, Allah teaches us that all people are equal. What matters is not your appearance or your background, but how righteous and kind you are.’
Discuss Key Verses
You can explain to your child that the Quran promotes equality and justice for all. A key verse to discuss is from Surah Al Hujuraat, which teaches us that regardless of our gender or our race, what makes a person valuable in the eyes of Allah is their character and their good deeds.
Praise Understanding
Finally, it is important to praise your child when they demonstrate an understanding of equality, reminding them that this value is central to the way they should interact with others. ‘I am proud of how you treat everyone equally and with kindness. This is exactly what Islam teaches us.’
Spiritual Insight
In Islam, equality is a fundamental principle, and the Quran repeatedly emphasises that all people are equal in the sight of Allah. Allah Almighty says in the noble Quran at Surah Al-Hujurat (49), Verse 13:
‘O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you.’
This verse teaches that righteousness, not gender or status, is what determines a person’s worth in the eyes of Allah.
The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also stressed the importance of equality in his teachings. It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 3587, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘The best of you are those who are the best to their families.’
This Hadith reinforces that both men and women are equal in their ability to contribute to their society and to their family. By teaching your child the Quran’s message of equality, you are helping them to internalise these Islamic values of fairness, respect, and justice.
