Should I tell the school staff we use another language at home?

Parenting Perspective

Sharing is Important for Your Child’s Success

Many parents feel unsure about whether to tell teachers that they speak another language at home. The truth is, sharing this information is very important for your child’s learning journey. When teachers know which languages your child hears and uses at home, they can better understand any gaps or mixing of words that might happen in class. This does not mean your child will be labelled negatively; good teachers value bilingual children and want to help them succeed.

Be open and calm when you explain your family’s language routine. For example, you might say, ‘At home, we mostly speak Arabic, and we also use English.’ This helps teachers to plan lessons, choose extra support if it is needed, and be patient when your child needs a bit more time. When schools and families share honest information, children feel supported in both places. It also shows your child that you are proud of your home language and culture, which builds their confidence in who they are.

Spiritual Insight

Our Differences are Blessings

Islam honours clear, truthful communication. When you share your family’s language background with your child’s teachers, you are acting with trust and wisdom. Allah Almighty reminds us that speaking openly helps to build understanding and compassion. Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Hujuraat (49), Verse 13:

‘O mankind, indeed, We (Allah Almighty) have created you all from one man and one woman; and placed you amongst various nations and tribes for your introduction to each other….’

This beautiful verse shows that our differences, including our languages, are blessings, not problems to be hidden.

Making Things Easy

The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ treated every person’s background and tongue with respect. It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 6125, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘Make things easy and do not make things difficult.’

By telling teachers about the language you speak at home, you help to make learning easier for your child. It is a gentle reminder that your home language is not something to be left at the school gate; it is part of your child’s identity and a gift from Allah Almighty. When your child sees you speaking honestly and proudly about your language, they learn that their words, heritage, and faith can work together with their schooling.
