How do I explain hijab and modesty as strength?

Parenting Perspective

A Symbol of Inner Strength

Explaining hijab and modesty as a strength involves helping your child to understand that modesty is a reflection of self-respect, dignity, and a commitment to their faith. You can start by explaining that hijab is not just a piece of clothing but is a symbol of inner strength and a belief in Allah’s guidance. You might say, ‘The hijab is not about hiding who you are; it is about showing the world your strength, your confidence, and your commitment to Allah. It is a choice that reflects your values and your faith.’

A Tool for Self-Respect

Encourage your child to see the hijab as a powerful tool for protecting their modesty and their self-respect. ‘By wearing the hijab, you are choosing to protect your body and your dignity. It shows that you care more about your character and your relationship with Allah than about what others may think of you.’ This reinforces the idea that modesty, both in clothing and in behaviour, is not a sign of weakness but of strength and confidence in one’s identity.

A Sign of Empowerment

Help your child to understand that the hijab is also a way of fostering respect for themselves and for others, and that it is a sign of empowerment rather than of restriction. ‘The hijab helps to protect you from being objectified and allows people to focus on your character rather than on your appearance. It is about empowering yourself to be seen for who you truly are.’

Spiritual Insight

In Islam, hijab is a form of modesty that reflects both internal and external strength. Allah Almighty says in the noble Quran at Surah Al Noor (24), Verse 31:

‘And say (O Prophet Muhammad ) to the women who are believers; to lower their gaze (upon forbidden things); and protect their private parts (with chastity); and not to display their beauty except that which is apparent (for functionality e.g. eyes, hands); and let them place their head veils over their upper bodies….’

This verse teaches that modesty is a virtue that helps to maintain dignity, respect, and self-control.

The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also demonstrated that modesty, including the hijab, is a strength that aligns with faith. It is recorded in Sunan Abi Dawood, Hadith 3252, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:

‘Speak the truth, even if it is bitter.’

This Hadith reminds us that modesty in both our behaviour and our appearance is an expression of our strength and our integrity. By teaching your child to see the hijab as a symbol of strength, you are helping them to align with the Islamic principles of modesty, dignity, and respect.
