Parenting Perspective
Cleaning up after handling raw chicken requires prompt and thorough attention to ensure kitchen safety. Because raw chicken can carry harmful bacteria, it is essential to act quickly not only for the sake of cleanliness but for the health of your family. Acknowledging the immediate concern, ‘we need to make sure the kitchen stays clean and safe for everyone’, helps to prevent rushing or skipping steps that might compromise hygiene.
Tidy Up in Stages
The first step is to clear any excess debris from the worktop using a paper towel or a disposable cloth. Next, use warm, soapy water with a clean cloth to wipe down the entire area. Follow this by sanitising the surface with a food-safe disinfectant or a diluted bleach solution (one tablespoon of bleach to one litre of water) to kill any remaining bacteria. If you do not have a specific disinfectant, white vinegar can also serve as a natural alternative.
Focus on High-Risk Areas
Be sure to clean the sink, cutting boards, and any utensils that came into contact with the raw chicken. It is wise to sanitise a cutting board separately using very hot water or a bleach solution, as this is a particularly high-risk item. Remember to also wipe down door handles, taps, and any other surfaces that might have been touched while you were handling the chicken or washing your hands. If you are in a rush, antibacterial wipes can be a good substitute, but always ensure the area is left to dry completely afterwards.
Establish a Regular Routine
To prevent anxiety about contamination, it is helpful to establish a cleaning routine for every time raw chicken is prepared. Keep a few essential cleaning supplies near your work area, such as antibacterial wipes, a clean cloth, and disinfectant, so they are always ready. This practice not only saves time but also builds a habit of cleanliness that will extend to other kitchen tasks. Just like teaching children to wash their hands, cleaning up immediately after preparing raw meat becomes second nature with practice.
Spiritual Insight
In Islam, cleanliness is deeply connected to worship, and maintaining a clean kitchen is a form of respect for the blessings Allah Almighty provides. The care we take in cleaning our spaces is not just about avoiding illness, but also about honouring the food we prepare and the environment we share.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verses 222:
‘“…Indeed, Allah (Almighty) loves those who repent excessively and those who adore their personal purification”.’
This verse speaks to the broader concept of purification, which extends beyond our spiritual state to our physical surroundings. Keeping our home clean is an act of respect and gratitude to Allah Almighty. When we care for our environment, we honour the food He has provided and the health He has granted us.
It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 223, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Purity is half of faith.’
This hadith highlights that cleanliness is integral to faith itself. The act of cleaning a worktop after handling raw chicken, while seemingly simple, aligns perfectly with this principle by ensuring our food is prepared in a pure and safe environment. It teaches children that their efforts to maintain hygiene are not only practical but are also an extension of their faith. This perspective elevates the simple task of cleaning into a moment of mindfulness and worship.
In every act of cleaning, you teach the value of both physical and spiritual purity, instilling habits that protect health and honour the sanctity of the home. This blend of practicality and spirituality creates an environment where cleanliness is second nature, and every action is rooted in a deeper understanding of faith.
