What can I do to show my child that resilience is part of being a believer?

Parenting Perspective

Children often see resilience as something external, such as a tough skin, a skill for school, or a way to please their parents. What they may not yet grasp is that resilience is woven into the very identity of a believer. It is not only about coping with challenges but about embodying strength through faith, trust, and patience. Your role is to reveal to your child that resilience is not just a life skill, but a way of being faithful to Allah Almighty.

Start by shifting your child’s idea of resilience away from ‘never crying‘ or ‘never failing‘. Explain that resilience in Islam means holding firmly to faith, even when life is difficult. You could say, ‘Being strong in Islam means trusting Allah Almighty and not giving up, even if you feel sad inside.‘ This shows them that resilience is about inner strength, not outward appearance.

Use Small Life Examples

When they fall off a bike, lose a game, or wait longer than expected, connect these moments to their faith. Say, ‘Just like you are learning to get up again after falling, a believer always gets back up in life and trusts Allah Almighty.‘ Such analogies help them to see daily experiences as a practice for spiritual resilience.

Share Stories of the Prophets

Nothing illustrates resilience better than the lives of the Prophets. Narrate how Prophet Ayyub عليه السلام endured a serious illness yet remained grateful, or how Prophet Musa عليه السلام faced rejection but persisted with courage. Frame these not as distant tales but as living lessons. You could say, ‘They kept going because they trusted Allah Almighty, and that is what believers do.‘

Emphasise Resilience as Worship

Children must learn that resilience is not only about worldly survival but is also a profound form of worship. Waiting patiently, persisting in prayer, and trying again after mistakes are all acts that Allah Almighty loves. Show them that resilience is rewarded in the Hereafter, which turns their effort into an eternal gain.

Practical Micro Practices at Home

Introduce a simple habit: when something goes wrong, pause together, take a breath, and say ‘Alhamdulillah‘. This practice reinforces that believers anchor themselves in gratitude rather than despair, which teaches resilience in real time.

Spiritual Insight

Resilience is not merely a worldly trait. In Islam, it is a defining quality of a true believer. A believer is not free from trials, but they shine through them by holding firmly to their trust in Allah Almighty.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Anfaal (8), Verse 46:

And obey Allah (Almighty) and His Prophet (Muhammad ﷺ), and do not dispute (with each other) as it may weaken (your ranks), and would reduce your strength, and show resilience; indeed, Allah (Almighty) it is with those people who are resilient.

This verse draws a clear line: strength and resilience are sustained by obedience, unity, and patience. Without patience, courage fades. With it, the believer gains the companionship of Allah Almighty Himself.

It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2999, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘The affair of the believer is amazing. All of it is good for him. If something good happens to him, he is grateful and that is good for him. If something harmful befalls him, he is patient and that is good for him.’

Here, resilience is described not as an optional trait but as the very definition of belief. A believer never loses, for gratitude and patience transform every event into something good.

By teaching your child that resilience is not only about surviving struggles but about being a true believer, you gift them a profound identity. They will begin to see that every difficulty is not a threat but an invitation to embody their faith, and that resilience, far from being a burden, is the mark of those whom Allah Almighty loves and never abandons.
