Parenting Perspective
Teach Assertiveness, Not Aggression
Teaching your child to speak up when they hear unfair talk is an important step in developing their confidence and their sense of justice. You can start by explaining that it is not only okay but also important to stand up for what is right when they hear something unfair or discriminatory. You might say, ‘When you hear something that is not right, it is important to speak up in a kind and respectful way. You have the power to help others to understand what is fair and just.’
Encourage your child to approach these situations calmly and assertively, rather than reacting impulsively or with anger. You can teach them to use phrases that are firm yet respectful, such as, ‘I do not agree with what you just said, and I think we should all treat each other with kindness and respect.’ This helps your child to understand that they can stand firm for justice while still maintaining respect for others.
Practice and Praise
Role-playing different scenarios where your child might hear unfair talk can help them to feel prepared and confident in how to respond. It is important to praise your child when they do speak up, as this reinforces the importance of standing up for justice. ‘I am really proud of you for speaking up today. You showed great courage and respect for others.’ This will help to build your child’s confidence and will encourage them to continue speaking out when they encounter unfairness. Lastly, remind your child that they are never alone when it comes to standing up for what is right, and that they can always seek support from a trusted adult.
Spiritual Insight
In Islam, standing up for justice and fairness is a core value. Allah Almighty says in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 42:
‘And do not mix the truth with falsehood, and do not conceal the truth, and you are fully aware (of what you are doing).’
This verse encourages us to speak the truth and to stand up against injustice, especially when we witness unfairness.
The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also exemplified the importance of standing up for justice in a way that was both firm and respectful. The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught the importance of speaking out against unfairness. It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 3587, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘The best of you are those who are the best to their families.’
This Hadith highlights that speaking out for fairness is not just an individual act but a fundamental value in our relationships, especially within the family and the community. By teaching your child to speak up against unfair talk, you are guiding them to live by these Islamic principles of justice, truth, and respect for others.
