Parenting Perspective
Slow Down and Read Together
It is wonderful when a child learns to sound out words, but true reading success comes when they understand the meaning behind them. One of the best ways to help is to slow down and read together, instead of rushing through the pages. Pause often and ask gentle questions like, ‘What is happening here?’ or ‘Why do you think he did that?’ Encourage your child to describe the pictures and predict what might happen next. This builds their confidence to link words with meaning.
If a book feels too difficult, choose a simpler one to build their understanding step by step. You can also act out scenes with toys or draw favourite parts of the story together to help the ideas stick. For children who read well aloud but struggle to grasp the concepts, try talking about the story in your own words first, then read it again together. Praise their efforts to explain things in their own way; it shows they are thinking about what they have read, not just repeating words from memory.
Spiritual Insight
Reading with Reflection
Islam teaches us that real knowledge is not just about repeating words but about grasping their meaning and letting that meaning shape our hearts. The noble Quran itself guides us to reflect on its verses, not merely to recite them without thought. Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Saad (38), Verse 29:
‘This book (noble Quran) we have revealed upon you (O Prophet Muhammad ﷺ), a blessing for those that reflect on His Signs (of the infinite truth) and a source of deliberation for those of intellect.’
This powerful verse reminds us that true reading invites reflection and deep understanding.
The Prophetic Example of Clarity
The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ explained the meanings of the noble Quran with immense patience, using simple examples that people could relate to in their daily lives. It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 6125, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Make things easy and do not make things difficult.’
When you pause to help your child truly understand a story, you are following this Sunnah of clear, thoughtful guidance. Whether the book is Islamic or general, you can use it to plant seeds of awareness. If the story has a good moral, link it back to gratitude or kindness. Remind your child that reading is not just a skill; it is a doorway to wisdom.
