Parenting Perspective
When a child cries ‘not fair’ while meticulously counting every pound, it often reveals a deeper concern about fairness and a strong tendency for comparison. Children at this stage are still developing their understanding of fairness, often viewing it as an exact match of what others receive. It is a natural developmental phase where they equate identical amounts with equal value. This emotional response often stems from a feeling of being overlooked or undervalued. As a parent, your role is to guide them through this reaction, helping them understand that fairness is not about matching quantities but about meeting individual needs and fostering gratitude.
Acknowledge Their Feeling of Injustice
Before addressing the logic of the situation, it is essential to validate their feelings. You could start by saying, ‘I understand you feel upset about the amount you received. It can feel unfair when it does not match what you expected’. This immediate acknowledgment helps the child feel heard and understood, which can ease their emotional distress.
Reframe Fairness as Meeting Needs
Next, gently shift the perspective by explaining that fairness is not about identical amounts, but about giving each person what they need or what brings them joy. You might say, ‘What is most important is that the love and care behind each gift is the same. What makes you happy does not always look the same as what makes your sibling happy, and that is okay’. Helping your child see fairness as respecting unique needs, rather than matching material amounts, encourages deeper empathy.
Reinforce Gratitude and Contentment
Finally, encourage your child to focus on what they have received with gratitude. You could say, ‘You have been given this as a token of love, and it is important to appreciate it, no matter the amount’. Reinforcing contentment and teaching them to see the blessing in what they have can reduce their fixation on comparison. You might also suggest a positive way to channel their energy, such as saving a portion of it for something meaningful to them.
Spiritual Insight
Islam teaches that true fairness comes from the wisdom and mercy of Allah Almighty, and it is rooted in gratitude, contentment, and the intention behind actions. When children focus on what they perceive as lacking, it is an opportunity to teach them the deeper values of gratitude and generosity, which contribute to their spiritual growth.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 286:
‘Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.’
This verse serves as a powerful reminder that what Allah Almighty has decreed for each person in terms of wealth and blessings is perfectly suited to their individual circumstances. For children, this is a profound lesson that what they receive is sufficient, and they are not being deprived. The challenge is to cultivate trust in Allah Almighty’s wisdom and contentment with whatever is given.
It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 4142, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Look at those who are below you (in wealth) and do not look at those who are above you.’
This hadith encourages us to focus on what we have and be grateful, rather than comparing ourselves to others. For children, this is a lesson that will help them grow into adults who appreciate their blessings without fixating on what others possess. It also reminds parents that teaching contentment with the provision of Allah Almighty is of the highest importance.
Through this guidance, children learn that fairness is not about exact amounts but about appreciating what is given, with the belief that Allah Almighty knows what is truly best for each individual.
