How can I log gifts privately so later treats balance out without scoreboard talk?

Parenting Perspective

Keeping a private record of gifts is a wise way to ensure balance, especially when treating siblings differently, as it helps to avoid fostering unhealthy competition or resentment. Children are naturally sensitive to any perceived imbalance. When gifts or treats are openly compared, it can easily lead to feelings of unfairness or jealousy. As a parent, the goal is to ensure each child feels equally loved and valued, without needing to measure or compare their experiences. By tracking gifts privately, you take a thoughtful step towards maintaining family harmony while ensuring both children are treated fairly over time.

Acknowledge the Need for Balance

Start by acknowledging that the desire for fairness is important, but clarify that this does not require a public scoreboard. You could say, ‘I understand you want to make sure everything feels fair, and it is important to me too. However, we do not need to talk about who received what, as we focus on love, not on counting gifts’. This simple reassurance helps set the tone that fairness is managed thoughtfully, not measured externally.

Track Gifts Privately and Fairly

You can keep a mental or written record of each gift or treat, including the occasion and its nature. A simple notebook or a private digital log could be used to list events like birthdays, holidays, or special treats. The key is to log these items in a neutral, non-comparative manner, focusing on the spirit of generosity rather than the monetary value. When the next occasion arises, you can consult the log to ensure both children have received comparable consideration over time, without mentioning this to them. You can then plan treats accordingly, maintaining a balance without constant discussions about ‘who has had more’.

Create Family Guidelines Without a Scoreboard

Establish a family guideline that discourages ‘keeping score’. You might explain, ‘We do not measure love with gifts; we give because we care. What matters is the happiness a gift brings, not how much we receive compared to someone else’. By cultivating this understanding, you teach them to focus on the intention behind giving rather than the quantity or value.

Spiritual Insight

Islam places great importance on intention and fairness, especially in our treatment of others. From an Islamic perspective, the principle of fairness extends beyond outward equality to include the state of the heart and the balance between justice and kindness. As a parent, tracking gifts privately aligns with this principle by showing consideration for each child without fostering competition.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 286:

‘Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.’

This verse serves as a reminder that Allah Almighty knows our individual capabilities and needs. Just as we do not compare one soul’s burdens to another’s, we should not compare gifts. What each child receives is in accordance with their needs and divine wisdom, not a competition. When we provide with this understanding, we practise a form of equity that resonates deeply with the spirit of this verse.

It is recorded in Riyadh Al Saliheen, Hadith 1773, that the holy Prophet Muhammad  said:

‘Be mindful of your obligation to Allah and do justice in respect of your children.’

This hadith teaches us the importance of being just and balanced in our actions, especially when it comes to giving. The key is to ensure that our giving is equitable and rooted in fairness, without needing to publicise what has been given. By logging gifts privately, we embody this principle, ensuring each child’s needs are met without fostering comparison or resentment.

In this way, you model for your children the deeper lesson that fairness and love come not from external comparisons, but from the intention and kindness behind each act of giving.
