What can I do to help them see effort as valuable as achievement?

Parenting Perspective

Children often live in a world where results are celebrated more than the journey. If left unchecked, this culture can lead children to believe that their worth is tied only to achievements. As a parent, you can play a powerful role in shifting this mindset by teaching them that effort is just as valuable, if not more, than the outcome.

Narrating and Acknowledging Process

Begin by narrating the process, not only the result. If your child spends time painting, instead of saying, ‘That is a great picture,’ try, ‘I saw how carefully you chose your colours and how long you worked on it.’ This shows them that you notice and value their effort. Over time, they will internalise the idea that persistence and dedication are meaningful in themselves.

Celebrating Attempts

Another crucial step is to celebrate attempts, not only successes. If your child tries to solve a puzzle but does not complete it, acknowledge their attempt by saying, ‘You worked so hard to fit the pieces; that was wonderful focus.’ This helps children understand that trying is itself a form of success.

Modelling Resilience

  • Share stories of resilience to reinforce this idea, highlighting people who worked for years before succeeding and how their effort shaped their character.
  • It is equally important to model this attitude yourself. When children see parents appreciating their own efforts  such as attempting to learn a new skill they learn that effort is to be respected regardless of the outcome.

Lastly, consider building small family rituals where effort is noticed. For example, during dinner, each family member could share something they worked hard on that day, whether successful or not. This regular recognition reinforces that effort is part of what makes each day meaningful.

Spiritual Insight

Islam beautifully upholds the value of effort. Success in the sight of Allah Almighty is not measured by worldly achievement but by sincerity, intention, and striving. This perspective protects your child from the pressure of results and grounds them in the deeper value of effort.

Every Effort Will Be Seen

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah An Najm (53), Verses 39–40:

‘And that there is not for man except that [good] for which he strives, and that his effort will be seen…’

This verse is a powerful reassurance that every sincere effort is noticed by Allah, even if it does not lead to immediate success. Parents can share this verse with their children after reflecting together: ‘Your effort is never wasted. Allah sees how hard you are trying, and that is valuable even if the result is different.’ This anchors a child’s heart in hope and dignity, showing them that their worth is tied to striving, not outcomes.

The Power of Intention

It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 1, that the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘Actions are judged by intentions, and every person will get what they intended.’

This Hadith shifts the focus from external achievement to inner sincerity. For children, this means that their effort, when done with a pure heart, holds immense value in the sight of Allah Almighty. Parents can explain: ‘When you try with good intentions, even if you do not win or finish, Allah rewards you for your effort.’

By rooting celebrations in these teachings, parents raise children who value the journey as much as the result. They learn to see effort as a form of worship when tied to sincerity and patience.
