How do I keep their early development filled with love not anxiety?

Parenting Perspective

The early years of a child’s life are precious, filled with first words, first steps, and countless small discoveries. These moments should be surrounded with love, security, and joy. Yet, parents often feel pressure from societal expectations, comparison with other children, or fear of delays. This can create an atmosphere of anxiety rather than peace. To protect your child’s early development, it is important to consciously nurture an environment where love is stronger than worry.

Prioritising Presence Over Perfection

Begin by focusing on presence rather than perfection. Your child does not need a flawless parent but one who is emotionally available. Simple actions such as reading together, laughing at their small jokes, or listening patiently, fill their development with affection. These ordinary moments communicate that they are cherished for who they are, not for what they achieve.

Replacing Comparison with Curiosity

Another way is to replace comparison with curiosity. Instead of looking at charts and asking, ‘Why is my child not there yet?’, shift to observing with wonder: ‘What is my child exploring right now?’ This change in perspective moves the focus from anxiety about milestones to joy in discovering your child’s unique rhythm.

Setting Realistic Expectations

  • It is also valuable to set realistic expectations for yourself as a parent. Anxiety often arises from the pressure to ‘do everything right’. Remember that nurturing love and security matters far more than early mastery of skills.
  • Creating a calm home rhythm helps as well. Gentle routines filled with story time, outdoor play, and family duas anchor them in peace.

Most importantly, offer words of reassurance often. Tell your child: ‘I love watching you grow,’ or ‘I enjoy being with you.’ These affirmations remind them that they are valued beyond performance.

Spiritual Insight

Islam emphasises that children are a trust (amanah) from Allah Almighty, to be raised with mercy, patience, and gratitude. Their development is not a race but a sacred unfolding designed by the Creator. Parents are encouraged to ground their approach in trust in Allah’s plan, so that love outweighs anxiety.

With Hardship Comes Ease

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Ash Sharh (94), Verses 5:

‘For indeed, with hardship comes ease…’

This verse assures parents that challenges and delays are always accompanied by ease and mercy. Reflecting on this verse allows families to remember that even if early development feels uncertain at times, Allah provides comfort and blessings alongside the struggle. Sharing this reflection with children teaches them that life is filled with Allah’s compassion, not anxiety.

The Importance of Mercy

It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 1922, that the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘Whoever does not show mercy will not be shown mercy.’

This Hadith demonstrates that nurturing love and compassion is not optional but central to raising children. Showing tenderness, hugging them often, and responding with warmth are not small acts; they are prophetic practices that shield children from fear and insecurity.

By anchoring early development in these teachings, parents replace anxiety with trust and compassion. Each stage becomes an opportunity to practise mercy, gratitude, and presence. A child raised in such an atmosphere learns that their worth is rooted not in performance but in being cherished creations of Allah Almighty.
