What can I do if they resist seasonal or local foods?

Parenting Perspective

Children typically resist new or restrictive choices when they perceive them as a denial of comfort or preference. To effectively address their resistance to seasonal or local foods, parents must transform the experience from one of limitation into one of joyful, sensory discovery and spiritual gratitude.

The Sensory Adventure of Seasonality

Avoid using negative language that implies restriction. Instead of saying, ‘You cannot have strawberries in winter,’ reframe the situation by stating: ‘Let us try what is freshly growing right now—it is a special blessing direct from Allah’s earth at this very moment.’

Turn the process of selection into a stimulating, sensory adventure

Engaging the Senses: Encourage them to actively touch, smell, and closely examine the textures and colours of seasonal produce at the market or in the garden.

Stories of Origin: Share simple, engaging narratives about the local origins of the food, explaining the hard work of the farmers, and how the sunlight and rain combine to create different, unique fruits and vegetables during each season.

Discovery Over Denial

Crucially, involve them fully in the preparation. Let them make vibrant smoothies from local fruit or hearty soups from fresh seasonal vegetables. Simultaneously, highlight the tangible benefits, explaining that these foods inherently taste better because they are at their peak, and therefore nourish the body more deeply. When children genuinely connect this act of eating with discovery, flavour, and gratitude, rather than denial or restriction, they begin to see local and seasonal foods as a magnificent blessing and a dynamic experience, not a rigid limitation.

Spiritual Insight

The Islamic perspective on food and provision encourages profound reflection on the timing and artistry of creation. This mindset teaches children to honour the natural cycles of the Earth as deliberate acts of divine kindness and perfection.

The concept of seasonal provision is beautifully embedded in the Divine revelation, urging believers to contemplate the process of sustenance.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Abasa (80), Verses 24–32:

‘Then let mankind look at his food—how We poured down water in torrents, then We broke open the earth, causing grain to grow therein, and grapes and herbs, and olives and date palms, and gardens of dense trees, and fruits and pasture…’

This eloquent ayah (verse) offers a spectacular spiritual meditation on the entire process of food production. It teaches children that the availability of food is not random; it is a meticulously ordered sequence following divine timing and design. By highlighting the sequential emergence of different crops—from grain to grapes, herbs, olives, and dates—the verse helps children to honour the seasons as an explicit part of Allah Almighty’s magnificent artistry and profound generosity. This understanding makes waiting for seasonal produce a beautiful act of recognition and patience (sabr).

The prophetic teachings confirm the spiritual and practical wisdom of valuing simple, locally sourced food.

It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 3349, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘The son of Adam does not fill any vessel worse than his stomach. It is sufficient for the son of Adam to eat a few morsels to keep him going. If he must fill it, then one-third for his food, one-third for his drink, and one-third for air.’

This profound hadith, while focusing on moderation, supports the value of valuing and prioritising what is simple and readily available. It reframes simplicity not as a compromise, but as a path to excellence and spiritual contentment. By encouraging moderation and highlighting the sufficiency of ‘a few morsels,’ the hadith guides children away from excessive demands for exotic or out-of-season produce. This encourages them to find gratitude and quality in what is naturally abundant around them, transforming the act of eating seasonally into an act of mindful stewardship and deep respect for the physical and spiritual balance endorsed by the Prophet ﷺ.
