Should I step in if my child feels left out because of language?
Parenting Perspective
Calm Support Makes a Difference
Seeing your child feel left out because of a language barrier can be painful, but your calm support can make a big difference. First, listen carefully to how your child feels. Let them know that their feelings matter and that it is normal to feel lonely sometimes when we do not yet understand or speak like others.
If the situation happens at school, talk to the teacher respectfully and share what you have noticed. Teachers can often help by pairing your child with kind classmates or using activities that are more inclusive. At home, you can practise small phrases your child can use to join in games or ask questions, so they feel braver next time. Praise them for any effort they make, even if they only manage a word or two. Gently remind them that feeling left out now does not mean they will always feel this way. Your patient encouragement shows your child that language is something they will grow into step by step, not something that should close the door on friendship.
Spiritual Insight
Our Differences Are a Blessing
Islam teaches us that no one should feel alone or excluded because of how they speak. Allah Almighty reminds us that He created us with differences so we could know and help each other. Allah Almighty reminds us in the noble Quran at Surah Al Hujuraat (49), Verse 13:
‘O mankind, indeed, We (Allah Almighty) have created you all from one man and one woman; and placed you amongst various nations and tribes for your introduction to each other…’
This verse shows your child that their language is not something to hide, but a blessing that connects hearts.
The Sunnah of Inclusion
The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ always noticed when someone felt left out and brought them close with kind words and gentle encouragement. It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 6125, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Make things easy and do not make things difficult.’
By stepping in calmly, you follow this Sunnah of looking after those who feel lonely. Make Dua that Allah Almighty brings comfort to your child’s heart and eases their tongue. Remind them that each effort they make to speak or join in is rewarded.
