How do I help my child stay proud of speaking more than one language?

Parenting Perspective

Frame Their Languages as a Blessing

It is a blessing for your child to speak more than one language, but sometimes they may feel embarrassed or worry about standing out. Your gentle encouragement can help them to see their languages as something to be proud of, not to hide. Often talk about the special ways their languages help them to connect with family, friends, and their community.

Share real stories about how speaking more than one language makes life richer, like being able to greet their grandparents, read special books, or make friends from different backgrounds. Celebrate small moments when they use both languages, like saying ‘Salam’ and ‘hello’ in the same conversation. Correct any mistakes kindly and remind them that nobody speaks perfectly all the time. Avoid comparing your child to others; focus on their effort and growth instead. Praise their courage when they try new words, even if they get them wrong. Over time, your calm support will teach your child that every word they speak is a sign of strength, not something to be shy about.

Spiritual Insight

A Sign of Allah’s Mercy

Islam teaches us that our different languages and backgrounds are a sign of Allah Almighty’s wisdom and mercy. Allah Almighty says in the noble Quran at Surah Al Rome (30), Verse 22:

‘And amongst His Signs (of the infinite truth) are that He (Allah Almighty) created the layers of trans-universal existence and the Earth; and (designed) diversity of your languages and your (skin) colours; indeed, in this there are (logical and rational) Signs for those who are imbued with knowledge.’

Remind your child that being able to switch between languages is part of this blessing; not every child has this gift.

Make it Easy

The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ respected every person’s word and never mocked any accents or mistakes. He reminded his companions that good words build trust and respect. It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 6125, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘Make things easy and do not make things difficult.’

By praising your child’s efforts and using kind words when they feel shy, you are following this, Sunnah. Make Dua that Allah Almighty keeps their heart firm and their tongue clear. Remind your child that every word they speak in any language can bring goodness, kindness, and Sabr when it is used well.
