Parenting Perspective
When people mock the extensive effort you make—be it meticulously packing safe food, diligently reading every label, or having to constantly explain necessary restrictions—it can naturally shake both your confidence and your child’s self-perception. However, one must remember that the ultimate goal is not to win the approval of others; it is to protect your child’s safety and inherent dignity.
The Power of Calm Modelling
When someone mocks, your child will instinctively look to you to determine whether the effort made is something to be proud of or ashamed of. If you remain notably calm and composed, they internalise the lesson that care is not a weakness; it is, in fact, love in action.
Respond to mockery with grace but absolute quiet firmness. A concise response such as: ‘We make this effort because it matters directly for their health,’ is entirely sufficient. You must avoid over-explaining or becoming defensive; too much justification tends to give the mockery undue power. Later, be sure to affirm your child: ‘We work this hard because you are worth it. People do not always understand, and that is completely fine.’ These small, consistent reassurances guard their self-esteem against external unkindness.
Reframing Mockery as a Lesson
You can also effectively reframe the experience for your child: turn every negative comment into a vital life lesson on empathy and difference. Explain gently that some people simply tease or mock what they do not fully understand. This helps them learn to rise above the behaviour of others and view their family’s choices as clear signs of care and strength, rather than as sources of embarrassment. When your calm, confident tone remains steady and unwavering, your child learns that love and truth do not require external validation to stand tall.
Spiritual Insight
The Islamic spiritual tradition provides immense strength for enduring social pressure, reminding believers that the value of their effort is judged by Allah Almighty alone, not by human opinion.
The Quran gently offers solace and courage to the hearts of believers when they face difficult times or opposition.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Imran (3), Verse 139:
‘So do not lose heart or fall into despair, for you will have the upper hand if you are [true] believers…’
This verse gently strengthens hearts under pressure. When others mock your sincere effort, remember that Allah Almighty values sincerity over popularity. Holding firm in what is right—especially when others ridicule it—is a profound mark of true faith. Your spiritual steadfastness quietly teaches your child that dignity lies in pleasing Allah Almighty, not in seeking the fickle approval of people.
The Hadith elevates humility and restraint as the means to achieve true honour and high status in the sight of the Creator.
It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 4176, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Whoever is humble for the sake of Allah, Allah will raise him in status.’
When you respond to mockery with humility and patience rather than defensiveness or anger, Allah Almighty honours you with deep inner strength. You demonstrate to your child that confidence built upon sincerity and piety never fades—it only grows purer and stronger with the passage of time.
Allow your calmness to become your da‘wah (invitation to truth). The more others belittle your efforts, the more Allah Almighty sees your restraint and multiplies your reward. By consistently guarding your child’s confidence with quiet faith, you teach them that true strength is not found in defending aggressively against mockery, but in trusting that Allah Almighty elevates those who act with truth, compassion, and unwavering patience.
