What Can I Do If People Roll Their Eyes at Their Special Meals?

Parenting Perspective

When others react dismissively to your child’s special meals, perhaps by rolling their eyes or offering subtle mockery, the experience can be deeply hurtful—both to you and, more importantly, to your child, who may already feel inherently different. The fundamental goal here is to protect your child’s sense of dignity rather than focusing on correcting the insensitive behaviour of others.

Shielding Your Child’s Dignity

When someone demonstrates disapproval with dismissive gestures, you must avoid reacting defensively or angrily. Instead, keep your voice calm and offer a neutral yet firm statement, such as: ‘This is precisely what keeps them healthy, and we are grateful that we are able to manage it.’ This deliberate approach shows your child that self-respect is not dependent on securing people’s approval or understanding.

Later, discuss the moment privately with your child. Acknowledge their feelings without amplifying them into a major issue. Say: ‘It is perfectly understandable to feel upset when people do not understand your needs. However, we know clearly why this matters, and that is enough.’ This type of calm reassurance strengthens their emotional resilience and actively prevents feelings of shame from taking root.

Empowering the Meal Experience

You can further empower your child by making the meal experience itself more positive. For example, let them help prepare or pack their food beautifully so it feels special, not merely restricted. Over time, true confidence grows not from desperately trying to blend in, but from comfortably owning one’s truth with peace. Remember, your calm reaction teaches them how to handle social discomfort gracefully, while simultaneously reminding others—silently—that manners and empathy are part of true decency.

Spiritual Insight

Islam provides clear guidance against any form of mockery or belittlement, viewing the protection of a person’s honour as an act of high virtue that is deeply rewarded by Allah Almighty.

The Quran directly addresses and strictly forbids acts of ridicule, reminding believers that judgment rests only with the Creator.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Hujurat (49), Verse 11:

‘O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them…’

This verse directly and unequivocally condemns mockery and belittlement. It is a strong reminder that rolling eyes, sarcasm, or dismissive gestures—though often subtle—are unacceptable forms of ridicule that Allah Almighty strictly forbids. When others act insensitively, maintaining your calm composure becomes an act of profound obedience. You show your child that their worth is defined by Allah Almighty’s sight, not by people’s fleeting and uninformed opinions.

The Hadith places the defence of a fellow Muslim’s dignity on a high moral and spiritual plane, linking it directly to divine reward.

It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Dawood, Hadith 4883, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘Whoever protects a believer from a hypocrite’s harm, Allah will send an angel to protect his flesh from the Fire of Hell.’

This hadith reminds parents that defending their child’s dignity with calm wisdom is a sacred act and a form of spiritual protection. By shielding them from humiliation and responding to insensitivity with respect, you actively invite divine protection and mercy into your life.

Therefore, when people roll their eyes, respond not with immediate hurt—but with quiet strength. In that decisive moment, you model to your child what real nobility looks like: calm faith, gentle boundary-setting, and complete trust that Allah Almighty values sincerity far above temporary social acceptance.
