What Should I Do When People Compare Them to “Normal” Kids?

Parenting Perspective

When people compare your child to “normal” children, the remark can wound deeply—especially if you are already striving to ensure your child feels fully accepted and valued. The most critical step is to protect your child’s sense of worth before attempting to modify others’ opinions.

Reframing Uniqueness as Strength

Calmly intervene the moment such comparisons are made. You can gently but firmly state: ‘Every child possesses different needs, and we wholeheartedly celebrate what makes ours unique.’ This response expertly reframes the comment from a source of shame to a source of strength, demonstrating that you are proud of their individuality.

Children rapidly internalise external comparisons. After the moment passes, it is essential to speak with your child privately. Let them know explicitly that being different does not equate to being lesser. Remind them of their distinct talents, inherent kindness, and sustained effort. Say something affirming like: ‘Allah made you special in wonderful ways that the world sometimes overlooks.’ Affirming their identity strongly builds resilience against unkind remarks and shallow judgments.

Leading by Quiet Example

Avoid the trap of over-explaining or continually justifying their differences to everyone; this can inadvertently make your child feel excessively ‘othered’. Instead, lead by a calm example. When you consciously refuse to compare your child or defend their needs excessively, people will sense your quiet confidence—and your child will naturally learn to mirror it. Over time, the opinions of others will lose their power, because your home will become a completely safe, loving space where your child’s value is not measured by how well they match others, but by how sincerely they live and grow.

Spiritual Insight

The Islamic worldview places immense value on the inherent honour of every single human being, providing a secure spiritual foundation against worldly comparisons.

The Quran offers a powerful reminder that the honour of humankind is bestowed directly by the Creator and is therefore unshakeable by social standards.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Isra (17), Verse 70:

‘And We have certainly honoured the children of Adam and carried them on the land and sea and provided for them of the good things and preferred them over much of what We have created, with [definite] preference…’

This verse powerfully reminds us that every human being—regardless of ability, restriction, or life circumstance—is divinely honoured by Allah Almighty. When others compare or belittle a child, they are forgetting that honour is eternally bestowed by the Creator, not fleetingly granted by society. A parent’s most vital duty is to nurture this profound awareness so the child feels completely secure in their divine worth

The Hadith clarifies the true measure of a person, shifting the focus away from external appearance or capability towards inner qualities.

It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 4143, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘Allah does not look at your bodies nor your forms, but He looks at your hearts and your deeds.’

This hadith is a deep source of comfort for any parent facing social comparison. It reminds you that the real measure of a child’s value lies in their sincerity, their character, and their actions—not in adherence to superficial worldly standards. If your child’s heart is pure, their patience strong, and their faith intact, they are already excelling in the supreme eyes of Allah Almighty.

So when people compare, hold your peace. Your child’s worth is not a matter for others to define—it is sealed securely in the divine promise of honour, love, and purpose
