How can I build trust again when my child has broken it?

Parenting Perspective

Acknowledge the Situation Openly

Rebuilding trust with your child after it has been broken can be a delicate process, but it is entirely possible with patience, consistency, and open communication. The first step is to acknowledge the situation and discuss the broken trust openly. You can start by calmly explaining what happened and why it caused a break in trust. For example, if your child lied to you, you might say, ‘When you did not tell me the truth, it made me feel hurt because I trust you to be honest.’ This helps your child to understand the impact of their actions.

Listen to Their Side of the Story

It is also crucial to listen to your child’s side of the story. Ask them why they acted in a certain way and allow them to express their feelings. This gives your child the opportunity to take responsibility for their actions and helps you to better understand the reasons behind their behaviour. In some cases, there may be underlying fears or anxieties that caused them to break your trust. Providing a safe space for your child to be open with you is key to rebuilding that trust.

Set Clear Expectations

Once you have discussed the situation, the next step is to set clear expectations and boundaries for moving forward. Let your child know that trust is earned and that they will need to consistently demonstrate trustworthy behaviour to rebuild the relationship. Encourage them to take small actions that show they are trying to regain your trust and be sure to praise and acknowledge those efforts to reinforce the positive behaviour.

Be Patient and Consistent

Lastly, consistency is essential. Trust is not rebuilt overnight; it takes time. Be patient and continue to offer your support and understanding as your child works to rebuild that trust with you. Over time, with open communication and consistent efforts, the bond between you and your child will be restored.

Spiritual Insight

In Islam, the concept of trust is deeply intertwined with the values of honesty, responsibility, and accountability. Allah Almighty emphasises the importance of trustworthiness in the noble Quran at Surah Al Nisa (4), Verse 58:

‘Indeed, Allah (Almighty) commands you to execute all trusts to their rightful owners; and when you (are asked) to judge between people, that you should judge with justice….’

This verse highlights that trust is a sacred responsibility, and it must be respected and upheld.

The holy Prophet Muhammad  also emphasised the importance of trust in his teachings. It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 143a, that the holy Prophet Muhammad  stated:

‘The one who is not trustworthy has no faith.’

This Hadith teaches us that trust is a foundation of our relationships and breaking it is a serious matter. By teaching your child the importance of trust and helping them to rebuild it, you are instilling values that align with the teachings of Islam, promoting integrity and honesty in all their relationships.
