How can I explain why viral food hacks are not always safe to copy?

Parenting Perspective

When children see viral food hacks online, they often assume that popularity equals safety. Their interest is usually driven by a mix of curiosity and a trust in the influencers or peers they see online. Acknowledging their excitement is the first step in guiding them towards a safer approach, rather than simply restricting them.

Validate Their Interest

Begin by recognising their enthusiasm for the new idea. You could say, ‘I can see why that food hack looks like fun and why you would want to try it. It is always interesting to see such creative ideas online’. This validation shows that you respect their curiosity and are not dismissing their interests out of hand.

Explain the Hidden Risks

Use clear and simple examples to illustrate the potential dangers that are not shown in a short video. Explain that, ‘Some viral hacks use ingredients or cooking methods that are unsafe and can cause stomach problems or other illnesses. We have to remember that popularity does not guarantee safety’. Children respond better to tangible risks than to vague warnings.

Offer Safe, Creative Alternatives

Channel their creative energy in a safe direction. Suggest that you could try to adapt the hack at home using hygienic ingredients and controlled, safe methods. For example, if a hack involves unusual food combinations or raw ingredients, you can work together to create a safer version that preserves the fun without the risk.

Encourage Critical Thinking

Invite your child to become a safety detective with you. Ask them questions like, ‘How can we check if this food hack is really safe before we even think about trying it?’ Guiding them to question and assess information for themselves nurtures responsibility and independence, strengthening their ability to make good choices.

Spiritual Insight

Islam emphasises the importance of protecting one’s body and making mindful choices as part of our gratitude and obedience to Allah Almighty. This includes being cautious about imitating trends that could be harmful.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verses 195:

‘…And do not let your actions place you in a (state of) destruction (by being miserly); and be benevolent, indeed, Allah (Almighty) loves those who are benevolent.’

This verse reminds children that protecting oneself from harm is not only a practical matter but also a moral and spiritual responsibility. Choosing safety over untested trends is a form of goodness that aligns with a mindful, faithful life.

It is recorded in Riyad Al Saliheen, Hadith 100, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘A strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than a weak believer, while there is good in both. Take care of your strength and health, for they are blessings from Allah.’

By explaining viral food hacks in the context of safety, critical thinking, and respecting one’s body as a gift from Allah, children can understand that your rules are not arbitrary. This guidance combines empathy and reasoning with spiritual insight to help them make informed, responsible, and safe choices.
