Should I teach faith-based terms before daily words?
Parenting Perspective
Weave Both Together
It is natural to wonder if you should start with Islamic words like Bismillah and Alhamdulillah before teaching your child everyday words like ‘cup’, ‘chair’, or ‘apple’. The best approach is not to choose one over the other, but to teach both together, woven into daily life. Young children learn language through repetition and real-life use. When you say, ‘Pass me the cup, Bismillah’ or ‘Alhamdulillah, you finished your milk’, you show them that faith-based words belong with everyday language. This makes Islamic words feel natural, not forced.
Focus on your child’s understanding and comfort. If they are still learning basic words for objects and actions, repeat those daily, then gently add phrases like Insha Allah when talking about plans or Mashallah when praising an effort. Keep your tone warm and patient. Children love copying what they hear often. Over time, they will begin to use both sets of words confidently because they see how naturally they fit together.
Spiritual Insight
A Constant Link to Our Creator
Islam encourages us to speak words that remind us of Allah Almighty throughout our daily lives.1 Faith-based phrases are more than just vocabulary; they are a constant link between our actions and our Creator. Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 152:
‘Thus, as you remember Me (Allah Almighty) I will remember you; and be grateful to Me (for my favours) and do not be extremist in disbelief.’
This verse shows the beauty of filling our speech with small acts of remembrance that draw blessings and mercy.
Enriching Daily Speech
The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ spoke words of faith naturally in everyday conversation, showing his companions how simple phrases can turn an ordinary action into an act of worship. It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 3375, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Keep your tongue moist with the remembrance of Allah.’
Teaching your child faith-based words alongside daily words creates a habit of remembrance from a young age. They learn that saying Bismillah before eating, Alhamdulillah after finishing, and Insha Allah when speaking of the future are not separate from normal speech; they enrich it. Trust that this gentle balance will shape your child’s tongue to praise Allah Almighty while staying grounded in daily life.
