When is the best age to introduce a second language?

Parenting Perspective

The Earlier, The Better

Many parents worry about whether there is a right or wrong time to start teaching a second language. The good news is that young children are naturally able to learn more than one language when it is woven gently into their daily lives. Research shows that the earlier you start, the more easily a child’s brain absorbs new sounds, words, and ways of thinking. From birth to about seven years old, the brain is especially ready to pick up multiple languages without confusion.

The key is consistency and patience. Even if your child does not speak both languages perfectly right away, they are quietly building a strong foundation. You can use simple, everyday opportunities: greet your child in both languages, read their favourite books in both, or sing songs that mix the words naturally. If your child resists or feels shy, do not push them. Keep it fun through games, pretend play, or storytelling. If you have missed the early years, do not lose hope. Older children can still learn well with steady exposure and positive encouragement. Your gentle persistence and loving example will help your child to see that learning another language is not a burden but a valuable gift for life.

Spiritual Insight

A Sign of Allah’s Perfect Plan

Islam honours every blessing that brings people together and strengthens families. Language is one of these gifts, connecting hearts across generations. Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Hujuraat (49), Verse 13:

‘O mankind, indeed, We (Allah Almighty) have created you all from one man and one woman; and placed you amongst various nations and tribes for your introduction to each other; indeed, the best of you in the judgement of Allah (Almighty) is the one who is most virtuous….’

This verse reminds us that diversity in language and culture is part of Allah Almighty’s perfect plan.

A Path to Paradise

It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 2646, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:

‘Whoever treads a path in search of knowledge, Allah Almighty will make easy for him a path to Paradise.’

This Hadith Shareef shows that any effort to learn or teach is honoured by Allah Almighty. Introducing a second language is a small but beautiful way of fulfilling this trust. Make Dua that your child grows to value every word they learn and uses it to strengthen their ties of family and faith. With your patience and example, they will carry this Amanah with gratitude, InshaAllah, building bridges of understanding wherever they go.
