When a family speaks more than one language, deciding which one to focus on first can feel confusing. Many parents worry they will choose incorrectly and hold their child back. The truth is that there is no single perfect choice. Instead, you can think about which language is most needed for your child’s everyday life. If you live in an English-speaking country, strong English skills will help your child to learn at school and build confidence with their friends. At the same time, your home or heritage language keeps them connected to family, culture, and faith. 

The best approach is often a gentle balance: focus on the language that supports your child’s daily learning but keep the home language alive through bedtime stories, family chats, and visits with relatives. You can use simple routines, such as one parent speaking mainly in one language, setting certain days for practising the heritage language, or reading the noble Quran in Arabic together. Stay patient if your child mixes words at first, as this is a normal part of learning. Do not compare your child to others; trust that steady exposure and your loving encouragement will help both languages to flourish over time. 

Spiritual Insight 

A Sign of Allah’s Mercy 

Islam teaches us that our differences, including our languages, are among the beautiful signs of Allah Almighty’s mercy and wisdom. Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Rome (30), Verse 22: 

‘And amongst His Signs (of the infinite truth) are that He (Allah Almighty) created the layers of trans-universal existence and the Earth; and (designed) diversity of your languages and your (skin) colours; indeed, in this there are (logical and rational) Signs for those who are imbued with knowledge.’ 

This verse reminds us that your family’s different languages are not a burden but a blessing to be cared for. 

A Blessed Path 

It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 2646, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated: 

‘Whoever treads a path in search of knowledge, Allah Almighty will make easy for him a path to Paradise.’ 

This Hadith Shareef shows that every effort to guide your child’s learning is counted as an act of worship. Choosing which language to focus on first is not about getting it perfect, but about protecting your child’s ability to connect with people and their faith. Make Dua that Allah Almighty grants your child ease in their speech, a love for learning, and the confidence to carry their languages as an Amanah.
