What should I do if they feel guilty for preferring other cuisines?

Parenting Perspective

When a child expresses guilt for enjoying cuisines other than their own, it is rarely a sign of rebellion. In fact, it is often the opposite: a sign of their deep-seated love and loyalty to their family and roots. This feeling of conflict shows that they care deeply about their identity. Your role as a parent is not to correct a flaw, but to gently guide them from a place of guilt to one of confident and balanced appreciation.

Reframe Guilt as a Sign of Loyalty

Begin by acknowledging and praising the beautiful quality that is underlying their guilt: their empathy and their desire to be loyal. This validation creates an immediate sense of emotional safety. You could say, ‘It sounds like you feel a little guilty because you love our family and our traditions so much, and you are worried that liking something new is a betrayal. That feeling comes from a very loving heart’. Once they feel understood, you can gently correct their misconception. Reassure them: ‘Liking a new food does not mean you have forgotten or disrespected ours. It just means you have a curious and open heart.

Create a Culture of Grateful Exploration

Your own attitude will set the tone for how your child navigates this feeling. If you are relaxed, open, and appreciative of different cultures, your child will learn to be as well. Create a home environment where food choices are not about a competition of identities, but about exploring Allah’s many blessings with a grateful heart.

Integrate and Enrich, Don’t Compete

Practically, you can show your child that different cultures can exist harmoniously on the same table. This visual and sensory lesson is often more powerful than words.Try pairing a beloved traditional dish with a new side dish from another cuisine. For example, you could serve traditional biryani with a fresh salad from another part of the world, or try a global dessert after a local main course. This demonstrates that embracing diversity does not erase a sense of belonging; it actually enriches it. It shows that your own culture is strong and confident enough to welcome others.

Spiritual Insight

Islam is a universal faith that honours the diversity of human culture as a sign of Allah’s creative genius. A believer’s identity is rooted in submission to Allah, not in adherence to a specific cuisine. Guiding a child past their guilt involves teaching them this beautiful, expansive worldview.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 29:

‘It is He who created for you all that which is on the earth…’

This profound verse is a powerful reminder that the entirety of the earth’s lawful and good provisions are a gift from Allah to all of humanity. Teach your child that this is a declaration of universal blessing. The diverse fruits, grains, and flavours found across the globe are all part of our collective human inheritance from our Creator. Liking a food from another land is not an act of disloyalty to one’s own culture; it is an act of appreciating the sheer vastness of Allah’s gift.

It is recorded in Sahih al Bukhari, Hadith 539, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘A believer eats in one intestine (is satisfied with a little food) and a Kafir eats in seven intestines (eats much).’

This hadith is not about restricting oneself to a single type of food, but about the spiritual state of the heart while eating. The believer’s ‘one intestine’ signifies a heart that is filled with contentment, moderation, and mindfulness of Allah. A person in such a state is not defined by what they eat, but by how they eat. Explain to your child that the noble values encouraged by the Prophet ﷺ—gratitude, balance, and simplicity—are universal principles that transcend culture.
