Parenting Perspective
Young people frequently operate under the assumption that historical figures are incapable of relating to the complexities and unique pressures of modern life. To effectively demonstrate that the example of the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ remains profoundly relevant, one must actively and consistently link his timeless teachings to the specific challenges of the twenty-first century.
Bridging the Historical Gap
The method involves using his Sunnah as the immediate solution to contemporary moral dilemmas. For example, when addressing the imperative of honesty in online interactions or social media, connect it directly to his absolute truthfulness (Sidq). When discussing the difficulties of navigating social dynamics and unkindness at school or among peers, link it immediately to his pervasive compassion—the consistent way he treated his companions and his enemies alike.
Parents should articulate this universality clearly: ‘The Prophet $\text{\P}$ taught us the fundamental principles for a balanced life—and even though the world is changing at great speed, his guidance possesses the divine wisdom necessary to fit every single situation.’ This relevance must then be substantiated through practical, family habits: engaging in consultation (shura) before major decisions, initiating every interaction with a heartfelt Salaam, consuming food with gratitude (Shukr), and responding to daily stress and setbacks with patience (Sabr).
Wisdom Over Ritual
The essential core of this teaching is to ensure children understand that the Sunnah is not merely a collection of ritualistic imitations confined to history. Rather, it represents an eternal reservoir of human wisdom and moral excellence. His teachings provide robust answers to today’s acute emotional and ethical needs: how to maintain composure in a frantic world, how to remain kind despite provocation, and how to stay spiritually grounded amidst an age dominated by speed and corrosive social comparison. The very solutions to modern life’s anxieties are found in his age-old balance.
Spiritual Insight
The enduring nature of the Prophet’s ﷺ exemplary conduct is not a matter of cultural preservation, but a direct command from Allah Almighty, establishing his life as the necessary compass for navigating existence and achieving salvation.
The Quran explicitly invites every generation of believers to find the ultimate source of spiritual and moral relevance in the character and conduct of the Messenger ﷺ.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Ahzab (33), Verse 21:
‘Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example for whoever hopes for Allah and the Last Day, and remembers Allah often…’
This verse constitutes a perennial invitation to humanity to seek relevance in his perfect example. It confirms that the most successful and divinely approved model of conduct—for every single person who holds faith in the ultimate reckoning—is found in his life. The Prophet ﷺ is thereby declared the singular and excellent guide for all times and all places.
The Prophet ﷺ himself guaranteed the timeless efficacy of his teaching, providing his followers with an anchor against moral and spiritual deviation until the end of time.
It is recorded in Mishkaat Al Masaabih, Hadith 1752, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘I have left among you two things; you will never go astray as long as you hold fast to them: the Book of Allah and my Sunnah.’
This profound declaration confirms that the Prophet’s ﷺ guidance is not bound by temporal limitations. By diligently demonstrating its living relevance in their daily lives, parents empower their children to see Islam not as an ancient, restrictive rulebook, but as the most modern, balanced, and complete methodology for living a life imbued with dignity, purpose, and enduring faith in the face of all worldly change.
