Parenting Perspective
Younger individuals, particularly children, often perceive religious obligations and practices as mere repetition—actions copied mechanically without any genuine grasp of their underlying significance. To cultivate a relationship with the Sunnah that is rooted in genuine affection rather than rote imitation, parents have the essential duty of illuminating its intrinsic meaning and purpose.
Revealing the Beauty and Purpose in Practice
Explain that every act comprising the Sunnah is laden with inherent beauty and a distinct spiritual objective. Illustrate this practically: when we smile, we are consciously spreading peace and lowering barriers between people, which is a prophetic teaching; when we offer a greeting, we are actively building societal unity; and when we share food, we are softening hearts and demonstrating gratitude.
Parents should consciously employ language that explicitly links the action to its intended spiritual outcome. For example, instead of simply instructing them, state clearly: ‘We eat with the right hand because the Prophet ﷺ taught us the importance of cleanliness and expressing gratitude to Allah Almighty,’ or ‘We gather for prayer because he deeply loved being in communion with Allah Almighty and wished this closeness for his community.’ Prompting reflection after the action is also vital: ‘How did you feel inside after you followed his way in that instance?’ This gentle prompting shifts the Sunnah from a simple habit to a deeply felt connection of the heart.
Embodying Joyful Adherence
It is paramount that parents themselves embody this love when they perform prophetic acts. The Sunnah must be enacted with cheerfulness and warmth, never with a rigid or burdensome adherence. When children observe that these practices bring joy, ease, and genuine connection to their parents, they naturally absorb the core message: the Sunnah is fundamentally about connection and devotion, not about arbitrary control or obligation. This lived example provides the crucial emotional proof that following the Prophet ﷺ leads to a better, richer spiritual life.
Spiritual Insight
The call to follow the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is directly tied to the believer’s relationship with the Divine Creator. Obedience is presented not as a frightening demand, but as the natural, loving response of a heart devoted to Allah Almighty.
The Quran provides the foundational mandate that distinguishes this path of love from one based on compulsion or fear. True religious observance is shown to be conditional upon responding to the Messenger’s ﷺ guidance.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Imran (3), Verse 31:
‘Say, if you love Allah, then follow me; Allah will love you and forgive your sins…’
This sublime verse draws a direct, unbreakable link between loving Allah and obeying the Prophet ﷺ. Following his noble example is the demonstration of that love, which in turn unlocks divine love and the forgiveness of shortcomings. For a child, understanding this concept profoundly shifts their view: obedience is not punitive but receptive—it is opening the door to a greater outpouring of mercy from the Almighty.
The prophetic tradition solidifies this spiritual hierarchy, making the love for the Prophet ﷺ the litmus test of complete faith. This level of affection ensures that the Sunnah becomes an intuitive response rather than a coerced effort.
It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 67, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘None of you truly believes until I am more beloved to him than his father, his child, and all mankind’.
This Hadith powerfully teaches that the entire structure of the Sunnah flows organically from sincere, paramount love. When parents lovingly elaborate on the beauty, compassion, and practicality embedded within the prophetic actions, they awaken in their children a heartfelt devotion that seeks to emulate, not just mimic. This ensures that compliance is driven by admiration for the Messenger ﷺ, leading to a faith that is both robustly practiced and emotionally fulfilling.
