Parenting Perspective
Music can certainly bring warmth, joy, and a desirable sense of rhythm to daily routines, particularly in the kitchen while preparing meals. However, without clear boundaries, it can quickly become an overwhelming distraction, interfere with family interaction, or even disrupt the mindfulness required during mealtimes and Sunnah habits. A truly fair approach balances enjoyment with attentiveness and profound respect for the spiritual and social context of eating.
Start by clearly differentiating between food preparation time and actual eating time. For example, music can play freely during cooking, washing dishes, or meal preparation, allowing energy and enjoyment to fill the space.
Strategies for Fair Implementation
A collaborative approach works well with children, particularly older siblings, as it invites them to participate in the process rather than simply complying with a command.
Invite children to choose the genre or playlist for the day during cooking, allowing them to feel included in decision-making and ownership of the rule. This shared responsibility also teaches fairness and encourages them to respect the family agreement when it is time for silence and focus. Furthermore, limiting music to a specific time window, such as strictly while preparing food or cleaning up afterward, ensures it does not dominate the environment or cause distraction during the vital time of consumption. Rotating the responsibility of choosing music among family members is another effective way to maintain fairness and avoid feelings of favouritism or resentment.
Parents Model
Parents should also model how to enjoy music responsibly without letting it completely absorb their attention. For example, one might lightly play an instrumental track while cooking and gently remind children that the meal time is a separate, focused activity. Over time, children learn to self-regulate their attention, understanding that enjoyment and mindfulness can coexist when regulated by intention. By consciously setting aside background entertainment at the dining table, parents successfully teach the value of calm and stillness. They model how to be fully present with the food, the moment, and the people seated around them. This environment naturally encourages authentic communication, replacing the passive experience of listening to music with the active engagement of conversation and dhikr.
Spiritual Insight
In the Islamic tradition, mindful eating is not just a practical habit; it is a spiritual practice woven with gratitude (shukr). The atmosphere and focus surrounding the consumption of sustenance are therefore of profound religious importance.
The noble Qur’an encourages conscious engagement with our meals and surroundings, linking consumption directly to worship.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verses 172:
‘O you who are believers, consume from amongst that which is purified, which We (Allah Almighty) have provided for you; and be grateful to Allah (Almighty), if you (truly) worship Allah (Almighty) exclusively.’
This verse encourages conscious engagement with our meals and surroundings. Music during meals should never undermine gratitude, reflection, or social harmony. A policy that ensures a quiet table creates a space where shukr is audible and felt, fulfilling the divine command to be thankful.
The act of eating must be initiated with the remembrance of Allah Almighty (Bismillah) and concluded with thanks (Alhamdulillah). Distracting sounds can interfere with this essential spiritual rhythm.
It is recorded in Riyadh Al Saliheen, Hadith 728, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘When one of you eats, let him mention the Name of Allah; if he forgets to mention the Name at the beginning, let him say: Bismillah awwalahu wa akhirahu (In the Name of Allah at the beginning and at the end).’
This Hadith underscores the sacred nature of the meal. When the environment is quiet and focused, saying Bismillah becomes an intentional act that protects the meal from the influence of the Shaytan. A family policy that removes musical distractions is a practical way to safeguard this essential Sunnah and ensure that the food is a source of barakah.
