What if relatives use different dialects that confuse my child?

Parenting Perspective

Reassure and Turn it into a Learning Moment

It is common for children to feel confused when relatives use different dialects or regional words, especially during family gatherings. You can reassure your child that this is normal and not something to worry about. Explain that many families have special ways of saying things, and it does not mean their own words are wrong.

When you visit family or speak on the phone, help your child by repeating tricky words in the version they know best. If their grandparents use unfamiliar phrases, turn it into a light-hearted learning moment; you could say, ‘In our dialect, we say it like this.’ Praise your child for trying to listen and join in and encourage older siblings or cousins to help translate if needed. At home, stick to one version of the language for daily use so your child feels secure and confident. Over time, they will get used to hearing different accents and words. These small steps will help your child to feel proud of belonging to a family that shares a rich language, even if it has many colourful variations.

Spiritual Insight

Diversity is a Blessing

Islam values the ties that bind families together, no matter how different their backgrounds or ways of speaking may be. Allah Almighty reminds us in the noble Quran at Surah Al Hujuraat (49), Verse 13:

‘O mankind, indeed, We (Allah Almighty) have created you all from one man and one woman; and placed you amongst various nations and tribes for your introduction to each other….’

This verse shows us that diversity, including dialects, is a blessing, not a burden. It invites us to listen, learn, and connect.

Make it Easy

The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ always treated people’s speech with respect and never mocked or dismissed regional differences. It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 6125, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘Make things easy and do not make things difficult.’

Guiding your child to cope with different dialects gently follows this Sunnah of mercy and patience. Remind your child that Allah Almighty loves their effort and intention, even if they cannot understand every word. Make Dua that Allah Almighty blesses your child’s tongue with clarity and understanding, and your family with conversations that build love and trust.
