What if my child struggles to use classroom tablets or keyboards efficiently?

Parenting Perspective

In the contemporary classroom, technology has become an essential tool for learning. However, some children may find it difficult to use tablets or keyboards efficiently, particularly if their fine motor skills are still in development. Parents have a key role in helping them build both comfort and confidence with these digital tools without creating undue stress or dependency.

Starting with Understanding, Not Pressure

Approach the difficulty with empathy and reassurance to maintain your child’s emotional safety.

  • Validate Feelings: If your child struggles with typing or navigating a tablet, begin by showing empathy rather than frustration. Children easily sense parental pressure, which increases their anxiety about using technology in class.
  • Reassurance: Reassure them that everyone learns at their own pace and that practice will lead to improvement over time. Let them know that even adults occasionally find it tricky to adapt to new devices.

Strengthening Foundational Motor Skills

Improve digital dexterity by building fundamental hand strength through non-digital play.

  • Finger Control: Typing or using touch screens requires highly refined finger control, coordination, and timing.
  • Playful Exercises: Encourage simple activities that strengthen small muscles in the hands, such as squeezing soft balls, playing with clay, buttoning clothes, or threading beads. These playful, non-digital activities indirectly make typing and swiping easier later on.

Introducing Short, Enjoyable Practice Sessions

Maintain a focused, brief practice routine to avoid fatigue and frustration.

  • Consistent Practice: Allocate five to ten minutes daily for your child to practise using a keyboard or tablet at home.
  • Fun Engagement: Start with engaging typing games or interactive educational applications that reward small progress. Avoid long sessions that cause fatigue or frustration. The aim is to make technology feel like a valuable learning tool, not an obligatory test of skill.

Teaching Correct Hand Placement Gradually

Introduce proper technique in a measured, step-by-step fashion.

  • Avoid Two-Finger Typing: Children often use just a few fingers when typing, which inevitably slows them down and tires their hands. Teach them basic hand positioning step by step rather than demanding immediate accuracy.
  • Tablet Technique: For tablets, guide them on the technique of gentle touch and appropriate finger spacing so they do not apply excessive pressure. Model the correct method yourself and then let them try.

Spiritual Insight

Islam encourages continuous learning and adapting to new tools that serve beneficial purposes. Helping your child embrace technology with patience and discipline aligns perfectly with the Islamic principle of seeking knowledge for goodness and personal growth.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Mujadila (58), Verse 11:

‘Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees…’

This verse reminds us that every sincere effort to gain knowledge, whether through traditional books, physical tools, or modern technology, brings spiritual elevation. Encouraging your child to persevere in learning modern skills is part of fulfilling their potential in the path of Allah Almighty.

It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 79, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, while there is good in both.’

This Hadith powerfully highlights that developing strength, whether that is physical, mental, or practical proficiency, is a valued endeavour in Islam. Teaching your child to overcome small, practical challenges like mastering a tablet or keyboard builds their inherent strength of perseverance and essential self-reliance.

When you guide your child with kindness, patience, and faith, technology transforms from being merely a classroom necessity into a profound means to learn discipline and express gratitude. Remind them that every new skill mastered through patience is a deliberate step closer to excellence (Ihsan), both in this world and in the sight of Allah Almighty.
