How can I encourage teachers to notice my child’s progress in fine motor skills?

Parenting Perspective

Encouraging teachers to notice your child’s fine motor progress demands gentle communication, respectful collaboration, and consistent support. Teachers are often managing large classes and may not immediately observe small, incremental improvements unless parents actively share their observations. By building a solid, respectful partnership with the teacher, you can help ensure that your child’s steady growth is both recognised and continuously encouraged at school.

Communicating Early and Positively

Initiate contact with a collaborative, appreciative tone rather than a demanding one.

  • Express Appreciation: Start by arranging a friendly meeting or sending a brief, cordial note to the teacher. Express genuine appreciation for their efforts in the classroom.
  • Share Observations: Share specific examples of home progress: ‘I have noticed that my child has been improving in using scissors and pencils at home, and I should love for you to keep an eye on their progress in class too.’ This approach invites collaboration rather than creating pressure.

Providing Specific Examples of Improvement

Concrete details are far more helpful to a busy teacher than general statements.

  • Detail the Growth: Mention the particular improvements you have noticed, such as, ‘She can now cut along straight lines with greater control,’ or, ‘He is holding his pencil with a much better grasp.’
  • Aids Recognition: This focused information helps teachers efficiently identify and genuinely appreciate those same signs of progress during their demanding classroom activities.

Asking for Feedback Regularly

Maintain a steady, interested line of communication to sustain the teacher’s awareness.

  • Casual Check-ins: Instead of waiting for formal report cards, check in casually every few weeks. A simple question such as, ‘How has she been doing with handwriting or craft work lately?’ demonstrates your ongoing interest without sounding critical or demanding.
  • Encouraging Observation: Consistent, positive communication encourages the teacher to observe your child more attentively during relevant tasks.

Reinforcing Learning and Sharing Evidence

Show the teacher that the progress is a team effort involving home support.

  • Share Home Efforts: Share the small activities you do at home, such as folding paper, colouring, or using clay. You can also ask if there are specific classroom tasks your child can practise at home to reinforce school learning.
  • Visual Proof: If possible, occasionally send a small sample of your child’s work from home, like a neatly coloured drawing, to illustrate their improvement. A short note saying, ‘She was so proud of this and wanted you to see it,’ highlights your child’s effort and strengthens the emotional connection with the teacher.

Spiritual Insight

Islam places great value on appreciation, encouragement, and the acknowledgement of sincere effort. Helping teachers notice your child’s growth aligns directly with the Islamic principles of gratitude and mutual support (ta’awun).

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Ibrahim (14), Verse 7:

‘If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]…’

When you express gratitude toward teachers and openly acknowledge their vital role, Allah Almighty blesses that relationship and increases goodness within it. Teachers who feel truly appreciated are naturally more likely to respond warmly and pay closer attention to your child’s specific efforts.

It is recorded in Sunan Abu Dawood, Hadith 4811, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘He who does not thank the people is not thankful to Allah.’

This authentic Hadith teaches us that expressing gratitude to people, especially those who educate or guide, is an integral part of showing our gratitude to Allah Almighty. By thanking teachers sincerely and sharing your child’s small victories with humility, you not only strengthen the professional cooperation but also set a profound spiritual example of respect and acknowledgment for your child to learn from.

Encouraging teachers to notice your child’s progress is fundamentally not about seeking approval it is about nurturing your child’s confidence, reinforcing the value of their effort, and honouring the growth Allah Almighty allows through patience and perseverance. When gratitude, effort, and kindness guide your approach, both your child and their teacher will feel valued, and learning will flourish in a spirit of shared encouragement.
