In many societies, children are praised when they collect visible milestones such as high grades, sports trophies, or certificates. However, not every child reaches those markers at the same pace or in the same way. When their lives do not include these “typical achievements,” their confidence may begin to falter. As a parent, you can strengthen their sense of worth by shifting the focus from public validation to inner growth and unique contributions.
Parenting Perspective
Notice and Name Everyday Strengths
Children shine in ways that are not always measurable. They may comfort a sibling, persevere through a hard task, or observe details others miss. Acknowledge these moments specifically: ‘I saw how patient you were when your game froze,’ or ‘You made your cousin feel welcome today.’ This teaches them that their value is not tied only to conventional achievements but also to qualities of character.
Offer Meaningful Responsibilities
Responsibility builds confidence because it shows trust. Even small tasks, like helping plan a family meal or caring for a pet, send the message: ‘You are capable and important.’ When children see that their actions impact the family, their sense of contribution grows, even if they are not collecting awards.
Celebrate Effort and Persistence
Make effort a celebrated event in your home. If they practise a new skill consistently, cheer for the perseverance itself, not just the result. You might create a “bravery board” where small acts of effort are displayed finishing a difficult puzzle, speaking up in class, or trying something new. This highlights that courage is an achievement in its own right.
Encourage Passions That Suit Them
Not every child excels in academics or sports. Some may thrive in art, storytelling, nature walks, or caring for younger children. Help them discover these interests and nurture them without comparing them to mainstream achievements. When children explore passions that match their temperament, they gain a deeper sense of competence.
Protect Them from Harmful Comparisons
Relatives or peers may compare them to others, whether intentionally or not. Step in gently with phrases like, ‘Every child has their own gifts, and these are worth celebrating.’ When your child hears you defending them, it reinforces that they are not lacking, only different.
Model Confidence Beyond Status
Show your child through your own life that dignity does not depend on titles or recognition. Share moments when you worked hard on something unnoticed, yet still felt proud. This example teaches that self-respect is built on integrity and persistence, not applause.
Spiritual Insight
Islamic teachings place immense value on intention, character, and sincerity, rather than outward recognition. This perspective is a powerful shield for children who feel unseen in a world that prizes only visible success.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Hujurat (49), Verses 13:
‘Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted…’
Here, Allah Almighty shifts the definition of nobility away from social achievements to righteousness. You can explain to your child, ‘Allah Almighty does not need you to win trophies to honour you. He values your goodness and effort.’
It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2564, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Indeed, Allah does not look at your appearance or wealth, but He looks at your hearts and your deeds.’
This Hadith teaches that external measures of success do not define worth in the sight of Allah Almighty. A child who tries with sincerity, who speaks kindly, or who shows patience is achieving more than many awards can reflect. Parents can translate this truth simply: ‘Your heart and your deeds matter more to Allah Almighty than certificates ever could.’
By recognising quiet strengths, offering responsibilities, and grounding your child in the spiritual truth that dignity lies in sincerity, you help them grow a steady confidence. They learn that even without typical achievements, their worth is intact, their path is honoured, and their contributions are seen by their family, by their community, and most importantly, by Allah Almighty.
