How do I remind them Allah measures hearts not speed?

Children notice quickly when they are not moving as fast as others, whether in learning, speaking, or physical growth. The danger lies in them believing that their slower pace makes them less valuable in the eyes of people, and perhaps even in the sight of Allah Almighty. Parents can protect them from this painful misunderstanding by reminding them consistently that worth is measured by sincerity and effort, not by speed.

Parenting Perspective

Speak Openly About What Matters Most

When your child compares themselves to peers, do not dismiss their feelings. Instead, use it as a moment to explain what really counts. You can say, ‘Yes, some children may learn faster, but Allah Almighty loves you for trying with your whole heart, not for being the fastest.’ Speaking these truths aloud helps reshape the narrative in their minds.

Use Examples from Everyday Life

Children grasp lessons better through relatable imagery. You might explain, ‘When two people race to plant trees, one may finish sooner, but the one who waters their tree with care will see it grow strong. Allah Almighty values the care, not the clock.’ These metaphors make abstract truths tangible.

Highlight Effort as a Victory in Itself

Encourage your child to see effort as something to be celebrated. Say, ‘Each time you try, even when it is slow, that is a success.’ When they hear that effort itself is a reason for pride, they stop seeing speed as the only measure of value.

Create Affirming Routines

Repetition helps children internalise truths. Consider a bedtime ritual where you say together, ‘Allah Almighty looks at my heart, not how fast I am.’ Such practices, repeated daily, engrave the message deeper than occasional reminders.

Model Patience in Your Own Life

Children watch how parents respond to their own challenges. If they see you growing frustrated when things take longer, they may believe speed equals worth. Instead, show calm perseverance in your tasks and say aloud, ‘I am taking my time, because doing it with care matters more.’ This models the very principle you wish them to believe.

Defend Them Against Comparison

If relatives or teachers highlight slowness, respond respectfully but firmly. Say, ‘Every child has their pace, but Allah Almighty values what is in their heart.’ Your child will remember that you stood up for them with words of dignity, which strengthens their self-image.

Spiritual Insight

The message that Allah Almighty measures hearts, not speed, is deeply rooted in Islamic teaching. This perspective offers children the comfort of knowing that their sincerity carries greater weight than their pace.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Ash Shu‘ara (26), Verses 88–89:

‘The Day when there will not benefit [anyone] wealth or children, but only one who comes to Allah with a sound heart…’

This verse reminds us that what truly matters before Allah Almighty is the condition of the heart, not worldly measures such as wealth, speed, or status. You can tell your child, ‘A pure heart is what Allah Almighty loves most, not how quickly you finish things.’

It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2564, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘Indeed, Allah does not look at your appearance or wealth, but He looks at your hearts and your deeds.’

This Hadith affirms that worth in the sight of Allah Almighty lies in the unseen qualities of sincerity and effort. For a child, this can be translated simply: ‘When you try with honesty, even if slowly, Allah Almighty sees it as beautiful.’

By weaving this reminder into daily life, parents build resilience in their children. They learn that speed is only a measure people notice, but Allah Almighty, the One who truly matters, looks deeper. With this foundation, a child begins to see slowness not as shame, but as a unique path where their heart is always enough.
