Parenting Perspective
A child might find themselves lost in a cycle of endless scrolling as a way to escape the pressure of intrusive thoughts. Recognising this habit is the first step toward reclaiming their focus and managing their internal anxiety effectively.
Identifying the Sensory Loop
Parents can help a child recognise the physical signs of doomscrolling. This often looks like a glazed expression or a complete loss of track of time. You can suggest that they check in with their body to see if they feel more restless after using their phone. If the child is using influencer feeds to numb their internal OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) anxiety, they are likely to feel a temporary relief followed by a sharper return of unwanted thoughts. Encourage them to notice if they are scrolling to seek information or simply to avoid being alone with their mind. By identifying this sensory loop, the child is likely to understand that digital consumption is a temporary mask for their distress rather than a cure.
Setting Conscious Intentions
Teaching a child to ask why they are opening an app can create a helpful pause. You can advise them to state their purpose out loud before they begin. For example, they might say they are looking for a specific craft idea or checking a message. If they cannot name a purpose, they are likely to be engaging in an avoidance strategy. You can suggest that they use a timer to bring awareness back to the present moment. This helps the child see that they have a choice in how they spend their energy. When a child understands that focus is a journey, they can remain calm even when they slip into old habits. Providing this structure builds a foundation of digital resilience for their future.
Spiritual Insight
Beyond practical strategies, there is a deeper sense of peace that faith provides to a restless heart. Noble Quran and traditions remind us that nurturing the soul is a vital part of finding true balance in a busy world.
Allah Almighty states in noble Quran at Surah Al Ra’ad (13), Verse 28:
‘Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah Almighty hearts are assured.’
This reminds us that when a child feels the need to numb their mind through distractions, returning to the remembrance of their Creator can provide a more lasting sense of safety.
It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 1, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘The reward of deeds depends upon the intentions, and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended.’
This teaches us that by helping a child set a sincere intention for their time, they can transform a mindless habit into a conscious act of growth and self-awareness.
A child who learns to spot the signs of numbing through digital feeds is better equipped to handle the challenges of internal anxiety. By combining practical boundaries with spiritual grounding, they can find a path to true focus. This balanced approach ensures they do not feel overwhelmed by their thoughts. Every parent can use these moments to build trust. Through this guidance, a young person learns to navigate their digital world with a light heart and a sincere soul today.
