What do I do when a child hides purchases to avoid sibling jealousy?

Parenting Perspective

When a child resorts to hiding purchases to avoid sibling jealousy, it is a clear indicator that they are worried about causing conflict or resentment within the family unit. This situation demands a gentle approach that fosters transparency and open communication, while simultaneously teaching empathy and consideration for others’ feelings. The primary goal is to address the underlying causes of sibling rivalry and help all children understand that there is space for everyone to have their own individual experiences and possessions without automatically creating jealousy or harmful comparison.

Addressing the Concern with Empathy

Start by acknowledging and validating the child’s concern about upsetting their sibling, but clarify that hiding is not the solution.

  • State the position: “I understand that you do not want to upset your sibling, but hiding things does not solve the underlying problem. It is important to talk openly about purchases so that we can avoid misunderstandings and fear.”
  • This demonstrates respect for their feelings and their desire to avoid conflict, while firmly guiding them towards honesty as the healthier long-term approach.

Teaching the Value of Open Communication

Encourage the child to be open about their purchases in a way that is sensitive and considerate of their siblings’ feelings.

  • Encourage thoughtful sharing: “You do not need to hide your purchases, but it is important to be considerate about how you talk about them with your sibling. Let us think about how we can share things without being boastful or causing unnecessary jealousy.”
  • This helps the child see that open communication, coupled with empathy, is a powerful tool for reducing misunderstandings and managing sibling reactions.

Creating a Family Policy for Purchases

Implement a straightforward family policy that encourages transparency while also acknowledging everyone’s right to personal ownership and privacy.

  • Establish the expectation: “Let us all agree that when someone buys something new, they can share it if they wish, but it is not something to boast about or use to make comparisons. We can all be happy for each other’s new items without feeling the need to compete.”
  • This essential step reduces the pressure to hide purchases and sets clear expectations for how to introduce and handle new items in a way that is respectful and considerate of everyone’s feelings.

Spiritual Insight

In Islam, honesty, fairness, and empathy are fundamental virtues for managing all relationships, especially those within the immediate family. The value of mutual respect and understanding teaches us that jealousy (hasad) and comparison should be actively avoided, and that we must support one another with kindness and generosity.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Hadid (57), Verse 18:

‘Indeed, the men who give charity, and the women who give charity, and lend to Allah a goodly loan, it will be multiplied for them, and they will have a noble reward.’

This verse teaches us the immense importance of generosity and how acts of kindness, both material and emotional are profoundly valued by Allah Almighty. When children are encouraged to share their joy in purchases openly and with generosity, they engage in a spirit of kindness, knowing that Allah rewards sincerity and thoughtfulness in all actions.

It is recorded in Sunan Nisai, Hadith 2543, that the holy Prophet Muhammad  said:

‘The best of charity is that which is given when you are rich, and start with those who are dependent upon you.’

This Hadith emphasises that charity and generosity must begin within the family, fostering an environment where love and mutual support are the central focus. By encouraging transparency and effectively reducing the causes of jealousy, you are teaching your children that sharing and mutual respect lead to stronger, more loving, and more spiritually fulfilling relationships.
