Parenting Perspective
Setting clear, agreed-upon rules for siblings borrowing each other’s tech devices is essential for maintaining respect, fairness, and trust in the home. Technology is a valuable resource, but when shared among siblings, the lack of defined boundaries can quickly lead to misunderstandings or feelings of disrespect. The primary goal is to foster mutual respect and ensure that every child feels their personal devices are treated with appropriate care and consideration. By creating a clear system for borrowing tech, you teach children that respect for each other’s property is just as important as maintaining personal responsibility for their own belongings.
Setting Clear Boundaries for Borrowing
Establish simple, firm rules that clearly set expectations for when and how devices can be borrowed.
- State the rules: “You can borrow each other’s tech, but we need to agree on a few simple rules. You must always ask permission before borrowing, and you must ensure you return it in the exact condition it was given to you.”
- This clarifies the fundamental boundaries, ensuring no child feels entitled to simply take someone else’s device without consideration or permission.
Creating a System for Sharing
To proactively avoid conflicts over access, implement a system where tech use is scheduled or clearly agreed upon for a specific duration.
- Propose an agreement: “Let’s agree that you can borrow each other’s devices only when they are not currently in use. Crucially, you must set a clear time when you will give it back, so that access is fair to everyone.”
- This helps children respect each other’s time and access to their own devices while teaching them the importance of clear communication and cooperation in scheduling.
Emphasising Respect for Devices
Encourage all children to treat each other’s technology with the same level of care and respect they would afford their own property.
- Define responsibility: “Always handle each other’s devices carefully and respect their privacy (their settings and saved information). If there is an issue or something accidentally gets damaged, you need to speak up immediately and take full responsibility.”
- This establishes an understanding of care and accountability, making it clear that all borrowed tech must be used responsibly and honestly.
Reinforcing the Importance of Communication
Encourage siblings to communicate openly and honestly if a borrowing situation feels uncomfortable or if a problem arises.
- Foster trust: “If you are not comfortable lending your device at a particular moment or if something goes wrong while you are borrowing it, you must be honest about it and talk it through with each other immediately.”
- This practice fosters trust and ensures that any concerns or incidents are addressed in a respectful and mature way, without fear of punishment for honest mistakes.
Spiritual Insight
Islam fundamentally teaches the values of respect, honesty, and responsibility, especially regarding the handling of each other’s possessions. By setting clear guidelines for borrowing and returning items, parents are instilling the critical importance of integrity and care for others’ belongings.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 283:
‘And do not conceal testimony, for whoever conceals it – his heart is indeed sinful, and Allah is Knowing of what you do.’
This verse underscores the profound importance of honesty and fairness in all dealings, which extends to sharing or borrowing items. Just as testimony should be truthful and transparent, so should our conduct regarding the possessions of others. By teaching your children to communicate and respect each other’s belongings, you align their actions with the Islamic value of honesty and fairness.
It is recorded in Riyad Al-Saliheen, Hadith 689, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Return the trust to the one who entrusted it to you, and do not betray the one who betrays you.’
This Hadith powerfully reinforces the idea of respecting others’ belongings as a sacred trust (Amanah). By setting and enforcing clear rules for borrowing tech, you are helping your children learn the intrinsic value of returning things promptly and in the same condition as they were borrowed, in direct alignment with the high moral standards taught in Islam.
