What Can I Do When Friends Think Our Care Is “Too Much”?

Parenting Perspective

When friends or acquaintances express the sentiment that your necessary allergy care is “too much,” it can feel frustrating and isolating. This often stems from a lack of understanding about the severity of anaphylaxis, not malicious intent. Your primary response must be to educate gently but stand firm on the necessity of the established safety protocols. Your calm certainty is the most important lesson you teach your child: that consistency matters more than approval

Responding with Calm and Certainty

The key to deflecting criticism is to maintain composure and respond factually, rather than engaging in an emotional defence of your choices. When someone makes a comment such as, ‘You are overdoing it,’ respond calmly: ‘It looks that way, I understand, but these precise steps prevent serious harm.’ This measured response acknowledges their perspective while immediately validating your actions.

It is important to share facts briefly, not to convince, but to inform. Sometimes people simply need the information to shift their perception from judgment to comprehension. Briefly explain the difference between a minor reaction and a systemic one. However, avoid defending emotionally or entering into long arguments. Your calm exterior teaches your child that their safety is non-negotiable and does not require external validation. Over time, friends who witness your steadiness and the successful management of the condition will respect your reasons even if they never fully understand the necessity of every detail.

Prioritising Safety Over Social Comfort

The parent must establish a clear boundary where the child’s safety is the absolute priority over social comfort or the desire to fit in with group norms. This involves consistently following all protocols regardless of the environment or the company. By maintaining this unshakeable standard, you ensure that the child internalises the importance of their medical management. The family must consciously avoid reducing safety measures to appease others, as this sends a dangerous message that external opinions can supersede medical necessity. This commitment strengthens the child’s own resolve to advocate for their needs as they grow older. Ultimately, the peace of mind that comes from knowing you have done everything required for your child’s well-being is the only measure that matters.

Spiritual Insight

The Islamic spiritual tradition offers clear guidance that shields the believer from being unduly swayed by external opinions or the pressures of social norms. The core principle is that one’s ultimate standard of action and accountability is before Allah Almighty, and certainty must be sought in divine guidance.

The Quran provides the ultimate perspective on individual responsibility and guidance, confirming that every person follows the manner of working that they believe is right, but Allah Almighty is the only true Judge of what constitutes the best path. This offers immense spiritual relief from the need to justify one’s carefulness to others.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Isra (17), Verse 84:

‘Say, each works according to his manner, but your Lord is most knowing of who is best guided in way…’

This verse firmly places the responsibility and the judgment solely with the Creator. It teaches the parent: you do what you must before Allah Almighty meticulously protecting the trust (the child’s life) that has been given to you. This knowledge confirms that others’ opinions cannot rewrite your intention or invalidate your necessary precautions. Your determined adherence to the safety protocol is your individual manner of action, and you rest assured that Allah Almighty is most knowing of who is best guided in way. This spiritual clarity empowers the parent to filter out external noise and focus on the duties ordained by medical necessity and faith.

The teachings of the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ provide a practical and profound ethical guide for dealing with distracting or unnecessary matters, including the unsolicited opinions of others.

It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 3976, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘Part of the perfection of one’s Islam is leaving that which does not concern him.’

This Hadith is a powerful reminder that unnecessary opinions and arguments over your family’s medical choices do not concern the immediate duty of the believer. The parent should consciously let unnecessary opinions pass. The spiritual focus belongs entirely to fulfilling the trust the child’s safety and well-being. By diverting energy away from defending one’s actions and towards executing the safety plan with meticulous care, the parent perfects good Islam and preserves the energy required for the highly demanding task of allergy management. This discipline is a direct pathway to greater spiritual composure and practical effectiveness.
