Parenting Perspective
When a child expresses that they feel distant from the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, it is a moment that calls for empathy, not disappointment. Such honesty is a sign of trust and should be met with warmth and understanding. Love is a journey of the heart, and it grows through familiarity and connection, not through pressure or command. Our role is to gently introduce them to the person he was, so that affection can blossom naturally.
Building Connection Through Gentle Habits
Creating small, consistent rituals can help make his presence a gentle and regular part of your child’s life. This is not about forcing emotion, but about creating opportunities for the heart to soften and connect.
Focus on habits that encourage a sincere connection over perfect performance. For instance, you could recite Salawat together before sleep, framing it as sending a message of peace to someone you love. Upon waking, you can remember his Sunnah of smiling and saying a morning prayer, metaphorically greeting him at the start of the day. For older children, journaling or even writing a short note of gratitude for a specific teaching can make the relationship feel more personal and tangible.
The Power of a Parent’s Example
Children learn love by observing it. The way we speak about the Prophet ﷺ in our daily lives has a profound impact.
Our own love must be visible and authentic. Mention him in conversation with tenderness and warmth, not just as a figure of authority. When sharing a story, let the excitement and admiration show in your voice. A parent’s genuine affection is contagious. When children see that your connection to him is a source of joy, comfort, and guidance, they will naturally be drawn to experience that for themselves. Over time, this shared atmosphere of love helps familiarity soften any sense of distance, allowing a child’s own affection to grow from a place of sincerity rather than obligation.
Spiritual Insight
In Islam, the journey towards loving the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is an essential part of faith itself. It is a path that turns confusion into clarity and distance into profound closeness. This love is not meant to be a vague or abstract feeling; the Quran and Sunnah provide a clear and practical framework for cultivating it. The primary means for developing this connection is through sincere obedience and adherence to his teachings (Sunnah).
When a believer actively incorporates his guidance into their daily life, from the way they eat and sleep to the way they interact with others, they are walking in his footsteps. Each act of ittiba (following) is an act of love that polishes the heart and strengthens the spiritual bond. It transforms devotion from a mere claim into a lived reality, proving that true love is expressed through action.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Hashr (59), Verse 7:
‘…And whatever the Messenger has given you, take; and whatever he has forbidden you, refrain from…’
This verse establishes a fundamental principle: obedience to the Prophet ﷺ is non-negotiable and is the primary way to demonstrate one’s submission to Allah. For a heart that feels distant, this provides a clear starting point. The path to closeness is paved with small acts of following his guidance. Each time a person chooses to adopt a Sunnah, they are actively choosing to draw nearer to him, and this consistent effort is what nurtures love.
It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 2678, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Whoever revives my Sunnah has loved me, and whoever loves me will be with me in Paradise.’
This beautiful Hadith offers both a definition of love and a profound reassurance. It teaches that love for the Prophet ﷺ is proven through practice, by keeping his teachings alive in our own lives. It gives a clear and accessible goal to a child who feels confused, showing them that love is not a mysterious emotion but a tangible effort. The promise of being with him in Paradise is the ultimate comfort, assuring them that every small step taken to follow him is a step that brings them closer to his beloved company.
