How can journaling or drawing help children reflect on his ﷺ qualities?

Parenting Perspective

Creative outlets like journaling and drawing offer children a beautiful way to move their knowledge of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ from their minds to their hearts. While stories and lessons provide the information, creative expression allows for personal reflection, making his noble qualities feel accessible and relevant to their own lives. This process transforms passive learning into an active, emotional connection, helping a child to internalise the lessons of his character in a way that lectures alone cannot achieve.

The Power of Personal Reflection

Journaling provides a quiet space for a child to think deeply about a specific aspect of the Prophet’s ﷺ character and how it applies to them. It encourages them to move beyond general admiration to focused contemplation.

You can provide simple prompts to guide their reflection. For example, ask them to write about one specific quality they admire in him, such as his honesty or his smile. Then, encourage them to think about a time during their day when they could have practised that same quality. For an older child, a prompt might be, ‘Write a letter to the Prophet ﷺ telling him what you learned from the story of his forgiveness at Ta’if.’ These exercises make his example a practical tool for their own moral and spiritual development.

Making His Character Visible Through Art

For younger children, or those who are more visually oriented, drawing can be an even more powerful tool. Art allows them to translate the abstract concepts of mercy and kindness into concrete images that they can understand and remember.Encourage them to draw scenes from his life that touched their hearts. They could illustrate the time he shared his food with the hungry, the way he comforted an orphan, or how he prayed with deep humility. As they draw, talk to them about the feelings and motivations behind his actions.

Creating a Family Ritual

To make this a consistent and cherished practice, consider creating a family ‘Seerah Journal’. This could be a shared notebook where each family member contributes their own reflections, drawings, or favourite stories.Set aside a calm time each week to engage in this activity together. This should be a joyful and non-judgemental space where everyone feels comfortable sharing their thoughts. A parent can join in by writing or drawing alongside their child, modelling the importance of this connection.

Spiritual Insight

The act of reflecting upon the character of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is, in itself, a profound form of worship. It is a practice of tafakkur (contemplation) that polishes the heart and inspires the soul to emulate the one whom Allah Almighty described as having the most excellent of characters. When this reflection is channelled through creative acts like writing or drawing, it becomes a powerful tool for internalising his Sunnah.

These creative expressions are not mere hobbies; with the right intention, they are transformed into acts of devotion. By focusing the mind and heart on his qualities, a child is actively engaging in a process of spiritual refinement.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Qalam (68), Verse 4:

‘And indeed, you are of a great moral character…’

This is the divine testimony to the sublime nature of the Prophet ﷺ. When a child writes about his honesty or draws a picture of his kindness, they are not just reflecting on a historical fact; they are engaging with this Quranic reality. They are attempting to understand and appreciate the ‘great moral character’ that Allah Himself praised. This creative act helps to internalise the divine compliment, making it a source of personal inspiration and a standard to aspire to.

It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 4237, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘The most beloved of actions to Allah is that which is done consistently, even if it is small.’

This Hadith provides great encouragement for practices like journaling or drawing. A weekly reflection or a simple drawing may seem like a small deed, but when done consistently out of love for the Prophet ﷺ, it becomes deeply beloved to Allah. It teaches children that the path to spiritual growth is not through grand, infrequent gestures, but through small, regular efforts that keep the heart connected to what is good and true. Regular creative reflection, though simple, is a powerful way for them to embody his teachings consistently and joyfully.
