How do I teach siblings to stand up for what is right together?

Parenting Perspective

Instil Values of Fairness and Justice

Teaching siblings to stand up for what is right together is a valuable lesson in teamwork, responsibility, and moral courage. You can start by instilling the values of fairness, justice, and standing up for others from an early age. Encourage your children to recognise the importance of helping each other, especially when someone is being treated unfairly. For example, if one child is being left out or excluded, you can teach the other siblings to stand up for them by including them or speaking up on their behalf. This reinforces that standing up for what is right, even when it is difficult, is an important aspect of a person’s character.

Use Real-Life Scenarios

Discuss examples of injustice or unfairness with your children and encourage them to think about how they would want to be treated in those situations. You can use real-life scenarios or stories to illustrate the importance of standing up for justice and being brave in the face of adversity. Praise your children when they work together to solve a problem or to defend someone in need. This reinforces the idea that standing up for what is right is not just about individual action but about supporting one another.

Create Opportunities for Teamwork

Create opportunities for your children to work together on challenges, whether it is at home or in a community setting. This helps them to learn how to collaborate and to support each other in making good decisions and standing up for their beliefs.

Spiritual Insight

In Islam, standing up for justice is a key principle. Allah Almighty encourages believers to be just and to support what is right. Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al-Baqarah (2), Verse 188:

‘And do not consume each other’s wealth inequitably, or present it (as a bribe) to the sovereign ruler, so that (the sovereign ruler may aid you) in consuming (further) wealth of the people inequitably, whilst you are fully aware (of your wrongful actions).’

This verse teaches the importance of standing against injustice and supporting fairness.

The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also emphasised the importance of standing up for what is right. It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 6114, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:

‘The strong person is not the one who can overpower others, but the one who can control themselves in moments of anger.’

This Hadith encourages moral courage and integrity. By teaching your children to stand up for what is right together, you are guiding them towards living in accordance with the Islamic values of justice, fairness, and moral strength.
