How can I help my child choose friends who share good values?

Parenting Perspective

Discuss the Qualities of a Good Friend

Helping your child to choose friends who share good values is an important aspect of guiding them towards a positive social circle. You can start by discussing the qualities of a good friend and the importance of surrounding themselves with individuals who exhibit kindness, respect, and honesty. Encourage your child to value friendship based on shared principles rather than on popularity or superficial traits. Explain that a true friend is someone who supports them in making good decisions, respects their boundaries, and encourages them to be the best version of themselves.

Provide Opportunities and Offer Guidance

Provide opportunities for your child to interact with different groups of children so they can form friendships based on mutual interests and values. It is important to observe the friendships your child forms and to offer guidance if you notice that a particular friend may not be a positive influence. Being involved in your child’s social life, knowing who their friends are, and understanding the dynamics of their relationships is key.

Encourage Reflection

Encourage your child to reflect on how they feel when they are with certain friends. Do they feel supported and respected, or do they feel pressured or uncomfortable? Teach your child to trust their instincts when forming friendships. If a friend is encouraging them to make poor choices or to act against their values, it is important to have an open conversation about how to handle such situations. Praise your child when they make choices that align with good values, and help them to navigate situations where peer influence may challenge their beliefs.

Spiritual Insight

In Islam, friendship is a relationship that should be grounded in good character and mutual respect. Allah Almighty teaches the importance of choosing companions who help one another to grow spiritually and morally. Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Furqaan (25), Verses 27-28:

‘And on the Day (of Judgement), those imbued in the darkness (of their ignorance and immorality) shall bite their hands, and shall say: “how I wish I had adopted the pathways taught to me by the Messenger. Woe be unto me, how I wish that I had not taken so-and-so as a friend.”’

This verse highlights the significance of choosing the right companions, as they can either lead us to righteousness or cause great regret.

The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also taught us about the impact of good company. In Sahih Muslim, Hadith 3000a, the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:

‘A person is upon the religion of his friend, so let one of you look at whom he takes as a friend.’

This Hadith emphasises the importance of surrounding oneself with individuals who hold good values and lead by example. By teaching your child to choose friends who share good values, you are helping them to align their social circle with the principles of Islam, leading them to a life of righteousness and spiritual growth.
