How do I teach my child that kindness is a strength?
Parenting Perspective
Kindness Requires Courage and Self-Control
Teaching your child that kindness is a strength begins with helping them to understand that being kind does not mean being weak or passive. You can start by explaining that kindness requires self-control, patience, and empathy, which are all signs of emotional strength. For example, you could say, ‘Being kind to others, even when they are not kind to you, is a sign of real strength. It takes courage to be patient and respectful in difficult situations.’
You can help your child to see kindness as a way to build positive relationships with others. Help them to understand that when we are kind, we not only help others to feel better, but we also strengthen our own character. ‘When we are kind, we build trust and respect with others. This helps us to build strong friendships and relationships.’ Finally, remind your child that Islam teaches us to be kind to everyone, regardless of their background or how they treat us.
Spiritual Insight
In Islam, kindness is seen as one of the highest virtues and is deeply connected to strength and character. Allah Almighty says in the noble Quran at Surah Aalai Imran (3), Verse 159:
‘So, it is by the mercy from Allah (Almighty) that you (O Prophet Muhammad ﷺ) are lenient with them; and if you had been harsh (in your speech) or restrained in your heart, they would have dispersed from around you…’
This verse teaches that kindness and gentleness are powerful qualities that bring people together and strengthen relationships.
The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also emphasised the importance of kindness and how it reflects true strength. It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 3587, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘The best of you are those who are the best to their families.’
This Hadith reinforces that kindness is not a sign of weakness but is a reflection of inner strength and good character. By teaching your child that kindness is a strength, you are helping them to align with the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and with Islam’s emphasis on good character.
