Parenting Perspective
For parents of a child with allergies, the confidence to leave them in the care of others stems from preparation, not denial of the risk. Confidence returns when you see safety systems working smoothly, and fear fades when replaced by trust supported by responsibility. To build trust gradually, set small trials first, such as a short, supervised visit, followed by gradually longer periods of care. Reassure your child before you leave, stating: ‘You are safe because everyone knows exactly what to do and has the instructions.’ This communication loop reduces anxiety for both parent and child.
Establishing Clear and Confident Training
The primary step is the rigorous, clear training of caregivers. Choose individuals—whether family or professional—who demonstrate they understand the allergy clearly and take the risk seriously. You must not only explain the signs of a reaction, the emergency steps, and the necessary medication, but also demonstrate medication use. Crucially, observe them practise administering the medication (such as the auto-injector) until you are satisfied they can do so correctly under pressure. This ensures competence and significantly alleviates parental anxiety.
Formalising Instructions and Trial Runs
Reliance on verbal instructions alone is insufficient and unsafe. Always leave detailed written instructions that outline the emergency action plan, medication dosages, and contact numbers, and ensure these instructions are updated promptly after any medical change or prescription renewal. To build trust gradually, set small trials first, such as a short, supervised visit, followed by gradually longer periods of care. Reassure your child before you leave, stating: ‘You are safe because everyone knows exactly what to do and has the instructions.’ This communication loop reduces anxiety for both parent and child.
Spiritual Insight
The Islamic concept of reliance (tawakkul) provides the ultimate spiritual framework for handling the anxiety of leaving a vulnerable child in the care of others. This teaching is clear: once practical efforts have been exhausted, the heart must be transferred to the Protector.
The Quran assures the believer that after taking all necessary, wise precautions the required medical and practical steps the final outcome rests with Allah Almighty. This is the essence of true tawakkul, which transforms anxiety into peace.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Talaq (65), Verse 3:
‘And whoever relies upon Allah – then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has already set for everything a [decreed] extent…’
This verse teaches that once you have taken every precaution and fulfilled your duty, reliance on Allah Almighty transforms anxiety into peace. The parent has done their part; the rest is left to the One who is sufficient for him. This assurance gives the parent the spiritual fortitude to step away confidently.
The Sunnah confirms that true reliance is not passive; it is an active spiritual state that follows meticulous physical effort. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used a beautiful analogy to explain this necessary balance between effort and trust.
It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 2344, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘If you were to rely upon Allah with the reliance He is due, He would provide for you as He provides for the birds: they leave in the morning hungry and return full.’
This Hadith illustrates that true tawakkul is active: the birds engage in effort by flying out, but they return relying on Allah Almighty to provide their sustenance. Similarly, the parent must prepare diligently, then release the worry, and confidently trust the Protector. This spiritual act of letting go, after having tied the camel, is the ultimate source of confidence when leaving a child in the care of others.
