Parenting Perspective
Today’s young people exist in a state of constant, pervasive digital visibility. A single scroll can expose them to images, videos, and conversations that bypass natural modesty and can quickly erode inner boundaries. When you instruct your child to “lower their gaze online,” you are not just asking for a temporary act of restraint; you are teaching them a vital skill: how to preserve dignity and spiritual focus in a space that fundamentally profits from tempting the eye. For this lesson to resonate and become effective, it must feel to the child like powerful protection, rather than arbitrary restriction.
Explain What “Lowering the Gaze” Truly Means
Start by clarifying that the command is not a simple physical act, but a matter of intention and self-discipline. Say to your child: “Lowering your gaze means consciously choosing what to focus on. It is an act of actively guarding your eyes, mind, and most importantly, your heart from anything that cheapens your respect for yourself or for others.”
This clear, comprehensive definition helps them recognise that the command is a universal self-discipline, applying equally to everyone who seeks to maintain a clean heart in a world saturated with distracting and tempting images. The focus is on cultivating the habit of selective attention.
Bring Faith Into Everyday Digital Moments
The reality is that the digital world is where this command lives most urgently. Encourage your child to internalise their faith when they scroll through social media or encounter unknown content. Teach them to pause and ask themselves simple, guiding questions before watching or liking suggestive content:
- ‘Would I look at this if the Prophet ﷺ were standing right beside me?’
- ‘Does viewing this content make me feel closer to Allah Almighty or more distracted from Him?’
Framing their choices with these questions creates a profound, living link between their technology use and taqwa (God-consciousness). The aim is to build quiet, internal awareness, not to impose external guilt, by reminding them that every click and every glance is known to Allah Almighty.
Teach Digital Modesty Through Example
A parent’s own screen habits are, arguably, the most powerful and sustained teaching tool. If your child sees you scrolling mindfully, avoiding gossip, and speaking respectfully about what you view, your actions lend immense weight and sincerity to your advice. Model actively filtering your own viewing and being highly selective about what you choose to share. Then, engage them as partners in this lifelong effort: “We are both learning this; even adults must diligently guard their gaze.” This shared humility and transparency softens their natural resistance and transforms the teaching into a partnership of mutual growth.
Build Spiritual Strength Against Curiosity
Children and teens are often led astray not by deliberate malice, but by unchecked curiosity. Help them understand that not every fleeting curiosity deserves to be immediately satisfied. Explain that a casual glance easily becomes a persistent habit, and these habits ultimately form their character. Tell them that Allah Almighty values intention over mere impulse, and that every act of digital restraint builds essential spiritual muscle. When they successfully manage to look away or close a tempting page, be sure to praise the effort. Say: “You just made a powerful choice in that moment you chose to obey Allah with your eyes.” Reinforcing success is far more effective for strengthening willpower than constantly scolding failure.
Spiritual Insight
Islam teaches that purity begins with perception. The command to guard the gaze is designed not as a punishment, but as a path to achieve and maintain inner peace, protecting the mind from imagery that plants unhealthy desires or false, often unattainable, ideals.
Purity of Vision in the Noble Quran
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah An Nur (24), Verses 30-31:
‘Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their modesty. That is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is All-Aware of what they do. And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their modesty…’
These verses clearly demonstrate that purity begins with choice. Parents can explain: “Allah Almighty does not forbid true beauty; He forbids the gaze that misdirects the heart. Online, this means making a conscious choice not to watch, follow, or linger where modesty is compromised or dignity is undermined.”
Strength of Restraint in the Hadith
It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 2624, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘The glance is one of the poisoned arrows of Shaytan. Whoever lowers his gaze for the sake of Allah, He will grant him a sweetness of faith that he will find in his heart.’
This Hadith beautifully transforms digital restraint from a burden into a spiritual blessing. It teaches that every time we turn away from temptation, even on a screen, we are rewarded with a profound spiritual sweetness: genuine serenity, true contentment, and a feeling of closeness to Allah. Teaching this principle turns modesty into a deeply felt aspiration, rather than just an avoidance measure.
By linking “lowering the gaze” to online life with calm, reasoned, and faith-based guidance, you build a vital bridge between ancient wisdom and modern challenge. Your child begins to see that their gaze must become selective, purposeful, and profoundly respectful. This is not suppression; it is mastery.
