Teach That Girls are Equals 

Helping your son to behave respectfully around girls involves teaching him to see them as equals and to interact with them with kindness, modesty, and respect, in line with Islamic principles. You can start by explaining that girls deserve the same respect as boys, both as individuals and as fellow members of the family and community. You might say, ‘Just like you want to be treated with respect, it is important to treat girls with the same level of kindness.’ 

Explain Healthy Boundaries 

It is important to teach your son about maintaining respectful boundaries. Explain that everyone, both boys and girls, has a right to their personal space and that it is important not to make anyone feel uncomfortable. You can discuss the importance of listening when a girl says ‘no’ or expresses discomfort, and of avoiding inappropriate jokes or comments. This helps to build a foundation of mutual respect. 

Praise Respectful Behaviour 

Finally, you should praise your son when he demonstrates respectful behaviour towards girls, as this reinforces the importance of treating everyone with dignity. ‘I am proud of you for being so respectful and kind to your sister and her friends. That is how we should treat everyone.’ 

Spiritual Insight 

In Islam, the concept of respect and equality between men and women is fundamental. Allah Almighty says in the noble Quran at Surah Al Nisa (4), Verse 1: 

‘O mankind, attain piety from your Sustainer, Who has created you from one person; and out of him created his spouse, and evolved from both of them, a multitude of both men and women….’ 

This verse teaches us that men and women are equal in the eyes of Allah, created from the same soul, and are deserving of the same respect. 

The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also exemplified respectful behaviour towards women, treating them with dignity and fairness. It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 3587, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated: 

‘The best of you are those who are the best to their families.’ 

This Hadith underscores that respect, kindness, and consideration for others, especially for girls and women, are essential in Islam. By teaching your son to behave respectfully around girls, you are helping him to live according to these Islamic values of equality, respect, and good character.
