How do I help a child with delayed speech learn two languages?
Parenting Perspective
Simple and Manageable Support
When your child has delayed speech, it can feel overwhelming to decide whether to continue with two languages. Many parents worry that bilingualism will make things harder, but research shows that using two languages does not cause speech delay. What matters is how you support your child’s language journey in simple, manageable ways.
Keep your words short and clear. Use lots of repetition and real-life examples; you can name things during play or daily routines, like ‘cup’, ‘milk’, or ‘ball’. Use the same simple words in both languages so your child hears them often. Focus on their understanding first: do they respond to your instructions and gestures? Celebrate every small step, even a single new word or sound. You can use gestures, signs, or picture cards if needed to help them express themselves.
Avoid comparing your child to their siblings or others. Stay calm and positive; your child will pick up what they can at their own pace. If you feel unsure, speak to a speech therapist with experience in supporting bilingual children. Your patient, loving support will help your child to grow in confidence, one word at a time.
Spiritual Insight
A Trust from Allah
Islam reminds us that every child’s ability and timing are part of Allah Almighty’s perfect wisdom. Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Shuraa (42), Verse 49:
‘For Allah (Almighty) is the sovereignty of the layers of trans-universal existence and the Earth; He has created what He desires; He grants to whom He desires female (offspring), and He grants to whom He desires male (offspring).’
This Ayah shows that each child’s unique nature is a trust from Allah Almighty, who knows what is best for them.
The Prophetic Example of Mercy
The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ showed deep compassion for those who faced challenges, guiding them with kindness and never rushing or shaming them. It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 1921, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘He is not one of us who does not have mercy on our young and respect for our elders.’
When you speak gently, repeat words patiently, and accept your child’s pace, you are following this, Sunnah. Make Dua that Allah Almighty grants your child ease in their speech and strengthens your heart with Sabr. Remind yourself that every new word, no matter how long it takes to come, is a gift and a sign that Allah Almighty’s mercy is with your family every step of the way.
