Parenting Perspective
Gift opening can be a joyful yet potentially tense family moment, particularly when younger siblings feel overshadowed by older ones. The excitement of receiving gifts can be overwhelming for children. If not managed carefully, the process can unintentionally lead to feelings of exclusion or disappointment. As a parent, your goal is to ensure every child feels included and valued, regardless of their age or what they are receiving. By managing the process thoughtfully, you can foster a sense of togetherness and prevent any sibling from feeling pushed aside.
Acknowledge the Younger Sibling’s Needs
Begin by recognising the potential for younger siblings to feel left out, especially if they are more passive. You could say, ‘I know you are excited to open your gifts, but we will make sure everyone has a turn, and no one will be left out’. This simple reassurance lets the younger sibling know that they are an important part of the celebration.
Create a Shared Experience
Instead of focusing on individual presents, create a sense of shared excitement by encouraging everyone to participate. For instance, you could say, ‘Let us open the gifts one by one and enjoy each person’s moment. You can help by handing out the gifts and sharing in everyone’s excitement’. This approach ensures the younger sibling is engaged, even when it is not their turn.
Emphasise Sibling Teamwork
You can encourage the older sibling to be a role model by involving the younger one. A simple suggestion like, ‘You are such a big helper, let us open your brother’s gift together!’ can help build a team spirit. By encouraging the older child to share the joy with the younger one, you reinforce the idea that the family celebrates together, not as individuals in competition.
Spiritual Insight
Islamic teachings foster a profound sense of community and togetherness, particularly within families. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ encouraged fairness and consideration for others, especially those who are younger or less vocal. The spirit of gift-giving in Islam is about sharing joy and ensuring everyone feels loved and included.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Hujurat (49), Verse 10:
‘The believers are but brothers, so make peace between your brothers.’
This verse highlights the importance of brotherhood and harmony within the family. When managing gift-opening, the focus should be on unity and mutual respect. It is not just about who gets what, but how the family can come together to share moments of joy. Ensuring that all siblings feel valued reflects the essence of the brotherhood described in this verse.
It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 66, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.’
This hadith teaches us the importance of considering others’ feelings. By ensuring that younger siblings are not left out during gift opening, you are embodying this principle of mutual love and care. Encouraging fairness and kindness during such moments strengthens sibling relationships and teaches your children to look out for one another.
By guiding your children through these experiences, you are not just managing a moment of gift-giving but are also fostering deeper bonds of love and understanding, which are central to the Islamic values of compassion and community.
