How Do I Explain The Love Behind Our Grandmother’s Cooking?

Parenting Perspective

When you take the time to explain your grandmother’s cooking to your child, you are engaging in far more than a discussion about food—you are actively teaching them profound lessons about care, legacy, and unseen love. Children often perceive cooking simply as a routine task, so you must help them consciously recognise the sincere emotion and devotion behind it. Tell evocative family stories that deliberately link specific meals to positive memories: ‘When your grandmother was tirelessly kneading the dough, she was quietly thinking of us all being full and happy,’ or ‘She joyfully spent those long hours in the kitchen because that was precisely her way of showing deep, enduring love.’ This powerful narrative transforms routine meals into cherished symbols of affection and selfless service.

Fostering the Cycle of Care

Invite your child directly into that crucial cycle of care. Allow them to safely stir the pot or pass the required spices, saying gently, ‘Now you are actively adding your own love to this food, just exactly as she always did.’ This intentional participation turns the act of cooking from a perceived chore into a profound act of family connection.

If your grandmother is thankfully still alive, actively encourage your child to cook alongside her—even if the process is messy or undeniably slow. The shared experience and the bonding moment matter infinitely more than the final result. If she has passed away, keep her cherished memory vibrantly alive by cooking one of her most popular dishes together, mentioning how her face used to smile when everyone sincerely enjoyed her food. In this thoughtful way, you firmly anchor your child’s understanding of love, not just in spoken words, but in tangible, repetitive actions of warmth, selfless patience, and generous giving.

Spiritual Insight

The Quran highlights the act of feeding others out of love and sincerity as a supreme act of devotion. Every meal that is lovingly served out of deep care carries a distinct divine blessing (barakah)—not because of its complex taste or its expensive ingredients, but purely because of the sincere heart and pure intention behind the effort.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Insan (76), Verses 8–9:

‘And they give food, in spite of their love for it, to the needy, the orphan, and the captive, [saying], “We feed you only for the countenance of Allah; we wish not from you reward or gratitude”…’

This deeply moving verse clearly reveals that the purposeful act of feeding others is a sacred act of profound selflessness. Your grandmother’s dedicated cooking, often performed with quiet, consistent devotion, perfectly mirrors this beautiful spiritual spirit. Teach your child that when food is meticulously prepared with genuine sincerity and generously shared with selfless love, it automatically becomes a sincere form of ibadah (worship).

The Prophetic guidance teaches that small, consistent acts are the most beloved to Allah Almighty.

It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 4240, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘Take on only as much as you can do of good deeds, for the best of deeds is that which is done consistently, even if it is little…’

Grandmothers worldwide often perfectly embody this essential Hadith—they express their deep love through simple, regular, and repeated acts of service. By helping your child see her routine cooking as an ongoing, continuous act of mercy and gentle generosity, you consciously nurture feelings of gratitude, humility, and a strong connection to their cherished family roots. Through this conscious reframing, they learn a timeless truth: that true love is not loud or dramatic—it is consistently steady, quiet, and deeply nourishing, exactly like a devoted grandmother’s comforting food prepared with sincere remembrance of Allah Almighty.
