How Do I Add Protein Without Making Suhoor Heavy?

Parenting Perspective

The Suhoor meal is essential for providing the energy needed to navigate the long hours of fasting in Ramadan. For active children and teenagers, including sufficient protein is vital for muscle support, recovery, and sustained energy. The challenge, however, is to add protein without making the meal feel heavy, which can lead to discomfort and sluggishness. The solution lies in choosing light, digestible proteins and pairing them with other nutrient-dense foods.

The Importance of Protein at Suhoor

Protein is crucial for maintaining energy and preventing hunger during a fast. Unlike carbohydrates, which are digested relatively quickly, protein breaks down more slowly, providing a steady release of energy. It aids in muscle repair, supports immune function, and promotes a lasting feeling of fullness, making it a key component of a successful Suhoor.

Focus on Lean Protein Sources

To incorporate protein without creating a heavy meal, focus on lean sources that are easier to digest. Excellent options include:

  • Greek Yoghurt: This is a superb source of protein that also contains probiotics to support gut health. It is lighter than many other dairy products. For a balanced meal, pair it with fresh fruit and a handful of nuts or seeds.
  • Eggs: As a source of high-quality protein and healthy fats, eggs are an ideal choice. A boiled or scrambled egg with vegetables provides substantial protein without feeling heavy. Paired with wholemeal toast, it becomes a well-rounded meal.
  • Cottage Cheese: This is a lighter alternative to other cheeses but remains an excellent source of protein. It pairs well with fruit, whole-grain crackers, or sliced vegetables for a refreshing and nourishing option.

Consider Protein-Rich Smoothies

For a light yet protein-packed Suhoor, smoothies are a fantastic solution. They are easily digestible and can be customised to meet specific nutritional needs. Blending protein-rich ingredients like Greek yoghurt or almond milk with fruits and vegetables creates a hydrating and energising meal. A spoonful of nut butter can further increase the protein and healthy fat content.

A sample smoothie could include:

  • Greek yoghurt or almond milk
  • A banana or a handful of berries
  • A handful of spinach
  • A spoonful of almond butter
  • A sprinkle of flaxseeds or chia seeds

Balance Protein with Other Nutrients

A truly effective Suhoor balances lean protein with complex carbohydrates and healthy fats. Complex carbohydrates, such as oats and wholemeal bread, are digested slowly and provide long-lasting energy. Healthy fats from avocados, nuts, and seeds help maintain energy levels and keep hunger at bay.

It is also wise to avoid heavier protein sources like red or processed meats, as these are harder to digest. Similarly, fried foods should be limited in favour of grilled, boiled, or steamed preparations to keep the meal light and energising.

Spiritual Insight

In Islam, eating is an opportunity for gratitude and spiritual connection. Suhoor is particularly significant, as it prepares us physically for the fast and spiritually for worship. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that this pre-dawn meal carries great barakah (blessing) and should be approached with intention.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 187:

‘…So, eat and drink until the white thread (of dawn) becomes clear for you, from the black thread (of the night) depicting the (starting time of) dawn; then complete your fasting until sunset…’

This verse reminds us of the importance of Suhoor, which sustains us during the fast and prepares us for the day ahead. Eating with mindfulness and balance is encouraged, as it allows us to perform our fast with strength and patience.

It is recorded in Sunan Nasai, Hadith 75, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘You should take Sahur for it is the blessed breakfast.’

This beautiful Hadith underscores the profound spiritual value of Suhoor. It teaches that the act of participating in this pre-dawn meal is in itself an immense blessing, so much so that one should not skip it even if all one can manage is a sip of water. The promise that Allah Almighty and His angels send blessings upon those who partake in Suhoor elevates the meal from a physical necessity to a deeply spiritual act, connecting our worldly preparation with divine mercy.
